Hi guys, i found a series of very interesting articles! There is even one on dealing with grief of chicken loss, which i was surprised to see but gratified to read. Also an interesting one on a healing technique for dealing with large areas of lost skin during a predator attack, which if successful allows feathers to regrow in those spots even if the wound was down to the muscle!

Thanks! While it is sometimes overwhelming we know that we will be living in this house forever and it will all eventually get done! I am definitely on the road to recovery, just still tire very easily.

I forgot to also mention, yesterday while in the back part of the pasture, I was enjoying the bluebirds that were congregated in the tree next to me when suddenly my son points and asks what type of hawk was flying over....it wasn't a hawk, it was a bald eagle. I couldn't believe what I was seeing, but there was no mistaking it!

We have eagles in the Belding area, they are becoming rather common in many parts of Mi. I have seen them in Grand Rapids also

Ours were out and about too, until they decided that they would go visiting the neighbors! And trouble maker also learned to get into the open slider, and go eat whatever her kid was eating.............lol. (chicken nuggets once!) When they shut the glass he'd stand there patiently and poop away! lol. Ours loved kids and cigarrett butts, so the neighbors on each side were hit up! If they heard kids they would get super excited and take off on a dead run to go "play".

His brothers were not nearly so evil, but they were horrendous on the garden and my poor flowers. The roses were a particular treat! Basically it's like a kid; if it's ok they don't really get to excited about it; tell them NO and they will spend every waking hour plotting ways to foil your wishes!

I am really fascinated by rotational grazing - sectioning off the pasture and moving different species through at different times. There is a lot of interesting reading on it.

It's not grazing, but I do rotation in my backyard for the dogs and chickens. Gives the soil recovery time from the hard usage by the critters.

I am so behind on this thread from my parents spending a week at our house for Christmas - I don't think I will be able to catch up! The four bantam mottled cochin cockerals in our basement are getting a little rowdy, so seeing if there is any interest in this guy. He was hatched October 27 from eggs purchased from Amy Knoll (http://www.westknollfarm.com/Mottled-Cochins.html) He has a nice comb, bright yellow very fluffy feet and legs but is still young and has a lot of filling out to do, so I can't really predict his type. As with mottleds, his mottling color will even out more as he ages. He was hatched from her rooster Grant and could end up being quite a looker. He is getting a little dominant over my one tiny pullet and three other roosters in the sandbox brooder so he needs to go somewhere with a little more space. Asking $10 for him - send me a message if you are interested.

My Nigerian Dwarf doe is just over halfway through her pregnancy! Very excited for any kids she has, and the milk she'll produce for us!

So the guinea that I posted pics of the other day has finally found her name... After watching her a while Kelly decided she should be named Kevin...(from UP) Gotta say after watching the walk it couldn't be more accurate

Jorey, My chickens calm me too...until you have a hawk attack, then come back like he did tonight...now there is no calm in me.....Only anxiety over the saftey of my birds.

I am also a lurker, always feel like im intruding when I jump intot hese threads (like I did a few days ago when I made my searching for cochins post, now Ive been lurking since.)

Whole new set of issues I'm not sure how to deal with. Our coop has a visitor who thinks he has moved in.







My son took these pictures after I found him carrying the pheasant around.

When I went out to see what was up the pheasant was in the chicken yard with the chicken eating away and none of the roosters had any problem with him. I am very nervous about wild birds and what "nice" things they may share with the chickens. He is not scared and won't leave at this point. Ideas? My son is already begging to keep him. We have a nearby shooting preserve so I'm sure he came from there.

If he let your son pick him up, he not a wild one. He's lucky he found somewhere to go for food and shelter. Congratulations on your new bird.

Ahhh....the joys of having a teenager is certainly something to make you pause. My daughter hit a deer last night and bent her hood, totaled the passenger side fender, and completely destroyed her headlight.

Glad to hear she wasn't hurt.

P.S. I might be up for driving to Ceder Creek Hatchery in Twin Lakes, MI if anybody want's to go. I can take 3 others seated comfortably...4 if you don't mind getting really close with your buddies. I have to call and check on availability, but I don't see a problem making a chicken run! My proposed run I would take M-90 to M15(very short stint on this road) to M-57 to M-46. I am willing to pick up anybody along this route (up to 4 people). Maybe we can all plan a day to be there and have breakfast/lunch out there? It would be nice to meet everyone.
Let me know if your interested....in the meantime I will check on availability.

I recently took this picture. I love this Araucana pullet's tufts! They're so even and poofy!

You goat looks awfully round for just 1/2 way through, triplets? or maybe just fur. I love the tufts.

Did you find anyone with cochins? I have been looking for a couple of white ones and haven't found any so ended up ordering a couple of chicks for this spring. I'm very well endowed with roosters, but only have a couple of hens.
