Looking for advice. I need to build some runs for my new coops. I need to do it cheap so am looking at using pvc and creating hoop runs. My question is what is the best size pvc to use? I was thinking 1 inch, but if smaller will work let me know! If I need to go thicker let me know! And if anybody has these how do you attach them at the ground level. I have a couple ideas, but wanted to see what others do. They come in 10 foot lengths so I am trying to figure out the best way to do this. Any and all advice is appreciated!

I don't know if it would be cheaper to use pvc but in the long run the cattle panel would last longer and it was so easy to build too.

This thread discusses some of the pros and cons of using PVC to make hoop houses (these may be closer in type to what you had in mind than the above link). My recommendation would be the cattle-panel type, both for strength and for durability.

So, we have been mulling over the idea of getting a pair of goats to milk. I think we have decided to give it a green light. So, anyone have any for sale? Thinking either the nubian or LaMancha but other are certainly considered. Also any helpful hits are appreciated. We are really starting to get this whole farm idea up and running. First Chickens now goats and of course our horses LOL Love this life!

That is too funny... we are thinking of getting goats too. We are actually looking for Nigerian Dwarfs though.. and having one heck of a time trying to find some that are around that will answer us! I wanted to start with kids so they would get used to our chickens, but hubby wants to start with at least one that is either pregnant or milking already!

Ok my fellow Michigan chicken lovers.. I have a slight dilemma that my husband and I have been arguing about. He wants to increase our chicken flock, but we don't really have the coop space for too many more right now. So, we are going to build something to add to our space. We have our idea and plans in our heads and such, but we need to know if a permit is going to be required. Does anyone know what we need a permit for? If it is not attached to a current structure, and is less than a certain square footage, do we need a permit? It won't be a permanent structure either. We are actually taking an idea for a small goat hutch and expanding it to be a bit bigger for the chickens he wants to add... any ideas??

lhawes- we are not pulling a permit since ours will not be permanent either. I guess it just really depends where you are and what your area expects. For the most part where I am they don't bother us too much. I am in the same boat as your husband with the goats. As long as one is milking the other isn't too important, but would prefer two milking but we can't always get what we want

Going back to the building, what are you planning? I am building the hoop house out of cattle panels for mine, also gonna make one for the horses to have a new lean to type shelter... I guess we will wait and see

If you build a shed style, you may need a permit... ask with your township. Mine are all moveable/disemblable... is that a word? LOL

During the day, always be sure to close your livetrap! A chicken may decide the bait inside is tasty. She was only caught for a minute, I was outside and heard the *snap!* of the cage closing.

I have had that happen several times! LOL and it's usually the same one who does it. Like... he wouldn't learn!

Nova -the way Pat walks looks like my son's Cochin Stevie. Pat has way more feathering but the waddle looks the same. We weren't sure Stevie would survive at the beginning he had such a difficult time walking. It was like his hips... Do chickens have hips?....and legs were connected wrong. He looks like you have babied him good!
