Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

naglady, bring her in, pet carrier, spare bathroom, keep her warm. If you have a vet, get a fecal check done. If not, worm her... everyone has their favorite go to wormer, you'll have to decide what to use. Feed extra protein, maybe some probiotics. Use poultry drench for a perk up. It is a nice quick influx of vitamins. Listen to her breathing, does it sound clear? Clicking? If she sounds a bit off, a few drops of VetRx on her chest, or a equal mix of that and water, use a qtip and swab around her nostrils. Well anyway, hope she'll perk up. She isn't necesarily old... maybe she just needs some doctoring...

nova-- thank you for your advice -i checked her breathing sounds earlier clear no crackling or anything like that.. her nose is dry.. ..i will look into some , I dewormer when i go to tractor supply.. which is 1 hr away.
checked her for mites/lice she looked clear plus i put de in the coupe .. is probiotic like yogurt.. not sure what it is.. and what is poultry drench.. Ive been giving her extra protien like boss, meat, cat food worms, and making sure she gets food over the othersi put some for her away from them.. they seem to peck at her to get her away.. I will bring her in tomorrow for a little while.. brought her in the other day to give her some cat food, cats and dogs were pretty fascinated by her.. she didnt seem to mind. not sure i want to deal with a vet. shes a chicken not a cat or dog.. i hope i dont affend anyone by saying that. but i will do my best to see if i can nurse her back, shes been like that since i got her.. the others were in poor health skinny and molting looking pretty sad.. the previous owner was just giving them scratch.. here they get layer mash mixed with somekind of liquid, broth, some animal fat, dairy along with cut up veggies, in morning.. and then in thier feeder i have layer mash to free feed in coop.. i keep fresh water for them all times, maybe she does need vitamins.. Thanks again

Well, that does shed a bit more light on the situation. Not being properly nurished can cause a lot of problems. The other girls pecking her away from food and such, she's low on the pecking order... Add another feed station. I'd switch to a high protien food with free choice calcium on the side until all the girls get their weight up. Most layer feed is right around 16% protein. Maybe use flockraiser (20%) or gamebird maintainence (22%) for the rest of the winter. The price is pretty close to the layer feed. Just be sure to provide calcuim free choice. Also get some Braggs natural/organic Apple Cider Vinegar. Put 4 tablespoons per gallon. This will thin mucus membranes in the gut, and allow for greater uptake of nutrients and vitamins from the food. DO NOT USE IN METAL WATERERS. Only use ACV in plastic waterers or you will poison the birds. Poultry drench is high potency vitamin and mineral drop... It will be with all the chicken meds/supplements at tractor supply. It is in a white bottle with a dropper top. Just put a drop in her mouth carefully once or twice a day while she's under the weather. It is a good thing to keep on hand. Last quite a while and is great for when birds are in stress from say heat, or an attack...

Help please, I am looking for a white leghorn pullet. I have 11 sweet hens, I had twelve, but my white leghorn "foghorn leghorn" was killed. I miss her dearly. I can't find one anywhere near me. I live in Manistee and work in traverse city. Thanks for your help!

Question for ya'll who are a lot more experienced than I am.

Is it a good sign when an interviewer calls one of your references, within five minutes of the interview ending? About ten minutes after, I got a text saying that he took the call and gave a glowing report on me! I am just a little surprised to hear that it happened that quickly!

Also, I am very glad that just to pick up an application, I wore interview appropriate clothing and brought my packet of paperwork (CNA certification copy, resume, etc.). Hopefully I was able to give a good first impression!

I would think its a good sign. Good luck, hope you get the job

You may want to consider 2 birds... Just bringing in one bird to an existing flock will leave her lonely and vulnerable being the newbie she's bound to be picked on terribly. If she comes in to the flock with another girl from her previous flock, it would be best.

Welcome to BYC!

Someone in Cedar had leghorns on CL last month. http://nmi.craigslist.org/grd/3438600422.html would be worth a call to see if they have any left! (and

You can buy heavy-duty poultry netting in smaller pieces on Ebay, the heavier weight is worth it, I have seen large hawks bounce off it like a trampoline.
I saw the netting on Ebay and the prices were quite decent for the variety of sizes available.
I think I'd like to see a hawk bounce...LOL.. That's just my sadistic side. Got a nice dorking roo to help out with watching the girls. He seems to be rising to the occasion.

Nova thank you.. the other girls that i got have filled out and very healthy and one lays pretty consistant and the other 2 i think lay every few days.. because i see a different looking eggs that i know are not my 2 original girls.. I do give them extra calcium.. I am hoping this is just malnutrition.and she gets better.. . my dd and i just went out and got her off the roost.. and brought her in she is in the shop that is warm but not as warm as inside house in a crate with straw.. we fed her some cat food and she ate it b4 bed.. I will make sure she gets a good warm nutritious breakfast b4 i take her out.. i just dont want her to be away to long i will bring her in the shop at night so the girls dont treat her worse when i put her back out with them.. I am not sure if its coinsadence but when she lifts her head up it kinda shakes.. could be nerves because animals in house.. but did it alittle bit outside to.. well have to watch that.. can i use regular acv.. i have some of that..i use plastic waterers.. i will let you know how she is in the morning. i know the other day when the temps were high and we started feeding her separate from the others.. she was walking normal and moving. was a big difference..
