Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Yes!!!!! And if I can make it, I'm hoping to unload my stash of yarn for sale. Etsy just isn't moving it fast enough and I don't have room for all I spin and I will have sheared my sheep by then. Hope y'all like to knit.

Thanks! I did forget the chili pepper! So silly of me. I went ahead and gave them some wazine yesterday. Now I just have to treat the barn cats and probably the sheep too. So I'll have to track down the choice medicines for them as well. Oh the cats will be fun. Ferals, all nine. Oy! It will be a little easier, I think, once I get the chickens out of the barn and OUT OF THE CAT'S POO. I can't wait to get building the new coop. I wouldn't seriously feed the eggs to my in-laws but sometimes... *shakes fist* My in-laws have a knack for getting on my nerves. They pretty much financed our lives but then continue to do and say little things that just ruffle my feathers. I live with it. I kind of have to.

Safeguard only treats barberspole worm and the brown stomach worm. It can also treat an infection of meningeal worm (ivermectin can prevent, but once the worm infects an animal, only safeguard can pass the brain/blood barrier to kill the parasite in the meninges). Many parasites are now resistant to Safeguard though, so it likely won't do you any good. It may still work in your area, but most places, it is sadly useless. Ivermectin or valbazen will work though, and those treat more types of parasites, too.

Before you worm you sheep, please get a fecal test done on at least a few of them. If you DO have a worm problem, you will know exactly what type of worm you are dealing with, and the load level. That way, you can treat with the proper wormer. Remember to never underdose, that helps lead to resistant parasites.

the city came today- ON A SATURDAY- and told me I have one week to get rid of my chickens.

I WAS fighting mad, now I am just crushed.

I dont bother a soul. I hang out in my backyard with my birds, and we bother nobody. I am so hurt that someone called. I put up with EVERYTHING in this neighborhood, just so I dont make waves..and have for fourteen years. Now though, someone so much as farts, I am calling the city.

So, because I want to be left alone- I am going to make a BIG HUGE production of moving my birds out. I will put them in cages in the front yard, and make sure the maximum number of people see me load them into the truck. Then I am going to move them to Robins' for a few weeks.

Then, I am bringing them back.

I will clear out their everything. Then - my husband said we will screen their whole area, falcon-proof it, and make sure the window to my utilty room is INSIDE the screened in area. If the city asks, we will say its the Cats pen. A way for them to go out.

My heart is broken really. I dont know who did it- its easy to blame my new next door neighbors. But on the flip side, its easy for someone to call, knowing I would blame the new people.

I had a great visit at Robins' and am grateful that she is my friend and someone I can take the chickens and roosters too. Thats where I was when the city came- delivering Chicken Little to Robins' house.

Been looking everywhere for a place to rent that's cheap, working now and want to move. I figure if i find someplace with cheap rent, like a park, then i can get to paying off my debts quicker and get my credit up. I want a REAL house ASAP! Probably gonna take a few years though;

I will keep one or two house chickens if necessary, i'm not going to give up my baby "hope"! (my pet hen's last egg/ chick, hatched after she died)

So my first thought was- I am certified to do wildlife rehab. DNR trumps city. I can legally rehab raccoons and oppossums and squirrels- I just stopped doing it because I didnt have anywhere to release them....

Then my next thought was- I COULD go buy up all the brown and black rats in the pet store and start a breeding/and release project out of my backyard...oh, undercover of course..

there ARE worse things to deal with than the neighbor owning a few hens...

OH- my husband was told he cant keep his classic John Deere in our front yard any longer. He has to move it. However, I just replaced my toilet. The old one is out on the deck. I plan on planting flowers in it. I think it is going to look PERFECT right in the spot that the tractor now sits...

I luv to buy seeds. Burpee catologe is my favorite.
Those seeds from last year are still good but buying new ones are always fun :).

I plant my snap peas along a fence. Just a 2X4 inch galvanized fencing that is 4 foot high. Its how I plant my cukes also. You have to help run them up the fence by intwine them.
Plant them early since they dont like heat. Also double up the seeds you are planting since I have never found a pea varity with a good germination rate.
Havent planted them for a couple of years. When I did you could not relay on a good crop, I guess thats the same with all vegies.
I also believe you can do a fall crop but have never tried.
Have you ever bought from Annie's Heirloom Seeds? They are a Michigan company, you guys should check it out!

Thanks again to whoever refered me to Crazy Chicken Ranch. I have contacted them and will be able to buy a couple hens in April. Sorry I can't remember who refered me but THANKS!

Stacy-
Yay for you!

Taprock-
I feel your pain. I am finding myself wishing for spring too, so I can get started on the garden again. I have ordered all of my seeds and seeds starting stuff. Speaking of that.
RaZ! I am planning to make some raise beds for the strawberry plants that I have ordered, and would like to know if I could fill the raise beds with all that manure that I have, or will have to get topsoil to fill in the beds for the strawberry plants? The manure I have is chicken/turkey/guineas/geese/Emu/peafowl droppings with pine shavings(some straw), cowpies with straw, and pig pebbles with straw.

Mom-
I am sorry for what you are dealing with. That got to be frustrating!
