well I am now 2 pullets less. and my olive egger project that I was SO excited about is not going to happen this year. My splash marans pullet's insides were outside, so we culled her immediately, and while we were at it we culled the splash wyandotte pullet that we've had problems with her butt since day 1.

That marans was the only reason I've kept the EE roo around. When this bag of food is gone, I'm going to make a final decision on who to keep, and make the rest into dinner (the roos, not the pullets).

My crested pullets heads look awful from all the feather pulling too. This is not a good day.

So sorry!
love my Dellawares (thanks Hillbilly) 1muttsfan, are you bringing chicks to CS? I would like to order a few if you are, as young as possible if they are not vaccinated for Mareks, I will do them while they are in quarantine.

So far things are looking up here, Both of my Buisques are doing well as are the hens I got from Hillbilly Hen
Thank you for giving them a good home. Has Shug gone broody for you yet? I am glad they are doing well.

Yes, Delawares are a wonderful dual purpose bird and they have personality plus!!

Naglady, I love the Delawares I have from Sandhill Preservation. Some of the others have not been so great. I guess the point with your birds is that they are not a breed but a hybrid, so their offspring will be unpredictable and not as likely to be as good a quality or as good producers. You might want to think about Chickenstock this spring, many people bring purebred chicks and older birds along to sell, some of the stock is really good.

i am thinking of it, only thing is its my dh bd, so and we take our weeklong camping trip.. so not sure..thinking about it though
At least yours can be bribed! Lol mine just stand on the threshold doing a silly balancing act until I bring their treat to the safety of their coop! It's pretty hilarious to witness.
that would sounds pretty funny

I got attacked for the first time by a goose today. Kris- I have changed the name of the the gander I got through you, his name is now Mudd . Luckily I was dressed for the weather with layers or I think he would have broken skin. I had to pull him off. So I carried him around for a few minutes and insulted him tremendously. He's picked one of my geese to chum around with, so I may have babies this year!!

Got my free chicken coop, hen and rooster, left 830am home about 6pm, i did some shopping in the big city b4 i came home, got them settled in, seem to be doing pretty good.
the lady also gave me a like new incubator, with egg turner, still in box both of them, chick feeders and water, some food, water protector, scaly leg spray, some dried meal worms, food, food container, a plastic nestbox that mounts to a wall..here is some pictures, i dont think these are isa browns like she says.. anyone know. daughter look them up in chicken book and says they are delaware, any input would be appreciated.
You lucked out. I don't know what they are, but they are pretty and if they are good layers and you breed them to a good laying breed the resulting chicks should be good layers as well. Congratulations!
Has anyone ever had a 1,500+ pound cow jump on your foot? I did, and yup, it hurt like crazy! Thought that she broke it. Thankfully it was when I was finishing up for the night. I do not bruise easily, but there is a faint hoof shape mark on my left foot. Next time don't try to pick up the manure scraper off the floor next to the cow. It scares her.

BTW, my sweet girl did not do it. It was one of the cows at work...

Ouch! Hope it didn't flatten your toes.

My hens don't seem to mind the snow as much as they despise the cold. The past couple weeks they haven't ventured too far out from the covered run, on the coldest days I think they all stayed in or under the coop. On warmer days they will trudge through the snow, no problem, but cold days they'd rather not.

They've also decided they no longer like cabbage, after I bought two big heads of it for them. So now I have a whole head of cabbage sitting around. Perhaps if BF doesn't have to work this weekend I'll see if he wants to take his nephew over to see our friend's goats. The nephew is obsessed with goats right now, so we figure he might enjoy getting to see them, and our friend's animals might like the cabbage more than our chickens do.

My DH wouldn't make me choose. I think he knows that if I had to, the choice might be kinda "iffy." I love all my animals, referring to my birds as my babies and my horses and donkey as my kiddos.

I set an alarm clock, yet the one inside my head doesn't want to trust it. So instead of having a good night sleeping I keep waking every hour or so to check the time. I must wake Granny a little before 6 and then take her for her weekly blood draw. After getting tired of this yoyo sleep pattern it was finally close enough to wake-up time to put on a pot of coffee. It has finished brewing so join me for a cup if you'd like.

Listening to this morning's prognosticators talking about the amounts of snow that they are guestimating will fall from this approaching storm.
If they are correct I am going to be very thankful to own a two stage snow-blower. They are calling for 7 inches in this area and much more for those of you who live north of I69.

Today the flags in the state have been ordered to be flown at half mast. Another of our valiant soldiers has fallen. This one leaving behind a wife and six children. Please find a little time in your day to give thanks for his sacrifice and pray for his family. This certainly makes worrying about shoveling a little snow seem quite trivial.
