Happy 5th Anniversary to me on BYC!

Been busy here, hatching out chicks and bottle feeding my daughters new nubian doeling. (pictures soon!)

Oh, wanted to add that there is a product called manna pro poultry conditioner that i use for sick birds or when they are moulting. It is a concentrated vitamin pellet that they relish, it also has probiotics in it as well. Even if they have worms it will pick them up, since they only need to eat a tablespoon of it to get their daily needs. Great for when they are off their feed, i have used it to save both babies and adults before. I make a warm mash out of it for the little ones. It also has a few minerals that i don't think the "regular" feeds have as well. Runs around $7, worth a shot??

I seem to be a dismal failure at culling birds. I have an Orloff - Yuri who was injured in the fall and ended up with a crossbeak. I was 90% sure it was a rooster but hadn't heard a crow or seen an egg so I figured it was worth waiting. If it was a hen I would wait to cull until after I had some eggs. So Yuri is very underweight even though I trim his beak. He is also the worst with mites - they seem to know he isn't healthy. Then this week he injured his foot. The toe is black as is a spot on the side. So it was either bring him in and treat or cull. I was undecided until I saw him sparing with another boy yesterday. I don't need another rooster, I would consider if he was a hen. So my DH said he would take care of him and didn't. So using Opa's very simple directions (obviously not simple enough for me

) I went to do the deed this morning. Now I'm the sensitive type that can't even stomp a mouse. So I finally get the nerve up and get him relaxed and give his head/neck a good pull. I feel separation (must not have been enough) and lay him down, only to have him stand up and look at me and toddle off to the door.

So I do it a second time with the same result. Third time I think I must need to get a better grip on his head... and can't get it to move at all.

So he's back in the coop until I get the nerve to try again or my DH comes home. I have never claimed to be a farmer.....

I had the same issue trying by hand, only my results were a bit worse... I ended up using an axe to finish the deed. I won't do it that way anymore.

Just wanted to pop in and say that Frittata is doing well after the back of his comb fell off. I let him out of the cage at bedtime last night to recover his dignity and put him on the roost. This morning it had scabbed over and he wasn't scratching at it any longer. Looking good. Well... actually it still looks nasty but he's coping as well as could be expected for a bird who lost part of his manhood and was caged in front his harem.

Oh and I'm now convinced, after hearing about everyone else and their eerily similar tales that a hacker kit was indeed a popular gift at Christmas this year and the hackers are all shopping in AZ... because.... that's where it's at?

Went snowshoeing at the Wittenbach this morning with my son's class to learn about wild birds and adaptation. It was nice and the nice lady who was our guide today confided to me that birds weren't her thing so I was on as back-up as I have been an avid birdwatcher since I was a kid. While she was talking about the species we might see while counting birds for a study, I watched a hawk swoop in for the kill behind the her and the class. LOL. Small hawks weren't on the list, incidentally. But the kids were treated to a trio of bluebirds which was awesome.

comb looks light to me; could do some ivermectin or something to do worms and supposed to do lice & mites as well; Poopy butt feathers usually mean worms or lice but can be other things, but those are the usual suspects. Uh-oh, eggs from the fridge don't hatch! Gotta stay room temp. If they get too cold they don't hatch! I'm sure there is someone on here that has a story to refute me, but i have had hens die where the only eggs i had from them was eggs from the fridge and not one of them would hatch. 5 out of 5 duds from fridge, but the rest of the hatch was excellent!

ok i will start keeping them out in a carton would that be ok, i didnt wash any of them.. they are pretty fresh.. i have read lots of articles saying it was ok.. and also had a friend that has done it a few times.. that is how i found out about it..

Tap, sorry that was so hard for you - but, if you could shoot a coyote at a distance, maybe you could put a .22 pellet into his head from up close? You would not even have to wear a dress. Just sayin'...
