Alright. DH and I decided to get a few more layers in April along with our meat bird order. I'm thinking 3 or 4, max. But I have no idea what to get. I have BLRW eggs coming in April, and I'm REALLY tempted to get some good dark marans eggs from another BYCer to hatch at the same time since I know I can't get good marans from a hatchery. But what else should I get?

We currently have: 5 EEs, a white silky, a mottled houdan, a GL polish, a GL and a SL wyandotte, a barred rock, a white rock, a black australorp (or possibly JG), and a cuckoo marans. Plus I have 5 roos, but those don't count. I feel like I should stay away from the crested breeds because the 2 we have now are really getting pecked on/feathers pulled by the other hens.

Here is your chance to help me pick! I'm fine with ordering from any of the bigger hatcheries since my work schedule just isn't going to allow me to drive 4+ hours downstate to any of the smaller hatcheries.

If you just want for the eggs and not fancy... I'd go with the Isa Brown. I love ours. She's nothing special to look at, but she always pays her rent on time in nice big brown eggs, and she's not a cranky tenant. Same goes for our plain jane White Leghorn. They're both good girls and make me a content landlord. I'm considering getting a couple more this spring.

However... that's only for the egg laying. I definitely think you should spice it up with the Marans too!

A mean cockerel just bit the dust. I was planning on doing it anyway, but his attitude sealed the deal earlier. I wanted it to be a bit...warmer. Oh well. He's in the crockpot on low, since I didn't have any plans for dinner anyway.

Oh my lord! That poor girl! I think with some good care, not expecting any eggs for a month or two, you'll have yourself some nice happy girls. I hope they didn't wear them out already with constant light.

You can also get Red Kote to spray on the legs. It's right next to the Blue Kote.

After over 60 years of being around chickens I still stand by my position that broody hens should be left alone. They will not starve themselves nor become constipated. They don't need to leave the nest to defecate. If a hen dies while sitting on eggs there was another problem or condition that caused her death. Without the proper equipment and training determining the cause of a bird's death is next to impossible. The death of a bird doesn't mean that you have done anything wrong. The grim reality is that if you are going to raise chickens some are going to die.

Top drawing is cool.. more visual interest, however, I would suggest eliminating the diagonal line (stick in back ground) in front and behind the roo... it visually divides the drawing (nice job by the way).

You have some darn good looking Fav roos. I may need to discuss future purchase. Mine seem so beard weak.
