Sillychicken- Cute little fella! Congrats!

My neighbor has an almost a year old Lamancha/saanen cross doeling that she have been wanting to rid of cuz she is too flighty for her, and have 2 possibly bred does already, so she is giving her to me for freeee!!!! :celebrate So, I am not envious of ya! ;) Will go down there and take a picture of her tomorrow. I will not bring her home for a while yet, not until snow melts and grass is growing, but I will give the neighbor fresh eggs for her board. :D I will use her as a bush goat, as there is a lot of weeds and bushes in the pasture that the cows won't eat, so win-win. :)

Is there any way you could get a wether or somethng for a companion? They are herd animals and do best with another for company. Otherwise they tend to get panicky. The only other thing she'll need are loose minerals! Congrats on the goat! Can't waitto see picts!

The only reason i know about the salt is because i once recommended the canned fish to someone else on the emergency section for a similar case; I was informed by another poster that birds (especially roosters) can get gout from extra high protein, especially with the excess salt) Blew me away, i didn't know that birds even got gout! But makes sense, because the other men-folk i know that eat this way get it too. ;) So now i give extra protein, but not too often.

No, not under legal limit! He just has a habit of catching fish that are on the small end of keeping, and since he spends all day/ night doing it don't want to clean them. Claims there's "not much meat there" LOL. I'm on to him. I have cleaned them myself but i'm still sloppy at cutting, and BOTH of us are paranoid about fish bones! My picky butt birds won't eat anything raw. Won't even eat certain kinds of fish; but absolutely adore sardines (but i don't eat the eggs afterwards for a few days, phew!) They like the extra stinky ones in the oil :D

We do the .22 method too for when they have to be put down; give them their favorite treat and let them fill up a bit. They never feel a thing. Even the mean boys get at least that much.
Ah the joys of posting on public forums. Sometimes your intention to help is beneficial and sometimes you get flamed. Been there, been done bad. (Remember my chicken "groping" post? LOL)
I too was surprised to find that chickens could get gout. I suffer from it myself but I rarely consume the trigger foods. Sometimes it just happens.

I stopped keeping fish because I was not very good at fileting them for the most meat. So I just did catch and release for a long time. Now with the chickens, I don't feel guilty for "wasting" a fish. My meager fillets are good for me and the remains are good for the hens.

On a side note, last summer when I had the ducks, I would sometimes throw minnows (rosies) in the duck pool for them to chase and eat. Sometimes those little fish would get tossed out of the pool and the chickens would gobble them up. I never noticed a difference in egg taste afterwards.

Ok I am going to VA in March and moving some chickens along the way. If you have anything that needs moved along my route, I can do it! (Ok not ANYTHING but you get the idea!)

Start at M, B is just a place to stay. i think I am going to head out on the 13th after work and try to get that far. L is to pick up from CPL and BM6. D is another overnight stop, E to meet Madam, F Snap, and pysanki, Finally staying at J for 2 weeks. I will be making trips to H and I if anyone would like to meet me at those points. I will also be going to the outerbanks to do a drive by of my house there and visit some friends. Leaving J on the 28th, stopping for the night around K. Stopping at L again to drop off and pick up, then on home to M. If you live near any of the places I plan on stopping and know of a cheap pet friendly hotel please let me know! i travel with three border collies so pet friendly is a must!

Hi Everyone! Real name is Charity. Live with my parents and 3 siblings on our first real country "farm" - 2 1/2 acres with a huge garden and almost 50 chickens, 5 ducks, and 2 dogs. We are just south of Lapeer, almost exactly 1 mile north of the town of Hadley, MI. My younger brother raises Cornish broilers in the summer in hoop houses on our back acre, about 3 batches of 100 chickens.

Hey, does anyone know of somewhere nearby where I can get hatching eggs or even already hatched ducklings of the Welsh Harlequin breed? My younger sister REALLY wants to raise them, and she has been looking for some good quality ducklings or hatching eggs. If we could find some within a reasonable driving distance that would be Awesome!!! She would really like to get eggs set by the first of April, or ducklings by the first of May if at all possible. Thanks!

I adore catfish. Can't kill them but once presented with a filet...............

I have switched to doing oven "frying" I use a egg, and water bath with a touch of salt and lemon, then roll them in panko crumbs; then again in the egg and panko. Did it once for DH's uncle (major fishing guy) and he gobbled a whole cookie sheet of them! Nice thing is that you can ready them and set them in the fridge, the cold and the wait actually make the crumbs stick better; then cook sheets of them at a time so everyone gets theirs at the same time :) You sprinkle the coarse kosher salt on top when they are hot out of the oven, so it sticks. Extra thick crusted, so pleases those who "don't like fish"

For Bass i like to do a hellman's recipe i picked up in a magazine. Equal parts grated parmesan cheese and REAL mayonnaise (i use the olive oil helman's that the recipe suggested) Spread that concoction on, and sprinkle coarse kosher salt and italian seasoning on it; spread olive oil (or pan spray if really desperate, lol. done it and lived) bake at 400 for i think 20 min. Oh the golden goodness! It comes out a tangy cheesy concoction. Don't taste so good on "oily" fish though.

Can you tell i have spring fever? LOL

This may a hypothetical question...
Some reading about goats suggest that they can adapt to other animal species as companions. Can a goat really have a chicken, cat or dog as a fellow herd-member?

I'm just curious.

Well our male goat thought he was human; but we tried a beagle and though the goat was neutered.......... but the goat really did like the dog, just liked a little too much. :D When we tried to adopt his brothers he really got mad and didn't want to share his space but i think had it been some girls.......... poor guy. (we did adopt out the beagle, it was a female and though i'm certain it wasn't possible we felt kinda bad for her)

I think i read something about this for roses too; does it stink? I have some roses in really big pots that need to be repotted

I haven't noticed any smell with the trees or surounding soil. If we have fresh fish yuck, we'll throw that in the holes. If we don't have fresh, we usually have an old "cottage cheese tupperware" or two worth of frozen in the freezer and we'll just plop it in the hole frozen. Easy peesy.

edit: I'm not sure about if it would smell for repotting. I haven't done that... only down in the ground. :) I'd hate to think of you sitting on your front porch, enjoying iced tea, with fish rot coming from the potted roses. Hmm.

Oops, I missed a couple of posts.

Fish yuck is about the only animal material that can be composted. I would not add fresh or frozen fish yuck to a potted anything. Outdoor planting would be okay or composting even better. I would not add it to any potted plant.

Just my 2 cents.
