Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Oh Oh, Six chick minimum?  I was planning for 4!  Hmmm I may have to rethink where I get my chicks or how big to build my coop!  I am waffling between 4x4 and 4x8.  I can see getting overrun by eggs with 6 chickens once they are all laying!  Which TSC had the silkies?  I haven't been to TSC Whitmore Lake in a few days and all they had was mixed bantams, I couldn't pick out which was which from that pile of cuteness!

I thought that. I'm up to 13 with more on the way. You'll always find a good neighbor to take some off your hands for you ;)

Miniefarm, there are a few folks on this thread that hatch out silkies. I'm sure you'll find a better quality than at TSC or Farm and Home. And always, ALWAYS go bigger on the coop. I think everyone on this thread wishes they had made their coop bigger than they built!!

Finally, the wind has died down quite a bit and the sun is trying to peek through. What a relief. Been taking care of Krisrose's critters this week and it was brutal with that wind!! This will make it much more pleasurable.

Have a good day, folks

Hey everybody, so I was in family farm and home for feed, and came home with 4 bantam assortment chicks. I better make sure I take as few trips as possible in there!

I also have a little one with what is I think an impacted crop, any thoughts as to boy or girl on this one? I am thinking boy.

Herducks, what's the matter with you don't you know not to go into places like that this time of year? But I am glad you warned me, LOL

Hey everyone! Just wanted to introduce myself to my fellow Michiganders! I'm in the process of getting some chickens for the first time. I want to have fresh eggs, love animals as do my kids and it will be a fun experience!

I live on Bois Blanc Island, which is the large island to the SE of Mackinaw Island.

You won't get too over run with eggs from 6 silkies (they are bantams).

very true on both points!!

Hi
Add me to the newbie list! I am completely new, no chicks, no coop, no brooder! I have been looking and reading like crazy. Right now I am designing and gathering pallets for my coop. I really don't want chicks in my house due to allergies, so I am trying to wait until the end of April so I can keep them in the garage.

We moved onto our 5 acres from the city last August. When I told my DH I wanted chicks, he rolled his eyes. The coop has to look nice and be up high enough that he won't have to bend down to clean or get eggs. I'll post some pics when as I get rolling on it!
Hi Minnnie! Welcome. Last year I got my first everything, its so much fun, however, having said that you have to be very careful when around chicks that are for sale, like some of the other ones on here can't resist. Sometimes they even have to make new coops. LOL

I didn't know that TSC (WL) had chicks yet. I was waiting until next week to go. I like that TSC better than the one in New Hudson.

I should be good and hold off though. I've been offered salmon faverolles later in Spring. Decisions, decisions.

Build the bigger coop. You will end up needing the space even if you don't fill it with chickens. You can partition it smaller a lot easier than making it bigger. Besides, plywood is 4x8 for a reason.
