Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Newbie question!  I have not ordered chicks and am trying desperately to stay away from TSC.  For a first timer, would you recommend that I get started Pullets or go all out and set up for Chicks?  If I get pullets, they can go straight to the coop, no set up costs for heaters, etc.  On the other hand, I won't have the first few weeks to have my hands on them, being picked up, getting them used to people.

ok here is a really silly question.  Do you pronounce  it "Isa" Brown or "I S A" brown?  LOL easier to call them comets!

I started last June with started pullets - two 12wk and six 6wk olds for the same reason and it worked great for me with less stress of "what might I be doing wrong" worries. By fall I felt comfortable enough with the housing and feeding that I was ready to add some chicks. I'm setting a couple dozen eggs to hatch in March now. That's how it goes...a few here, add a few more... can't resist a dozen more...next thing you know it's time to add another coop.

I have a beautiful bantam blue orpington cockerel who looks just like his daddy if anyone is interested.

Are you trying to find a home for him? How old is he? Is this a blue orpington Rooster or is it a blue bantam? I am looking for blue orp chicks but would take one rooster for future breeding. Splash orps and black orps are okay also if you have any of these send me a private e-mail for contact.

I'm here, not that it's important. Nothing to report on really. The chickens are picking up their laying a bit. 3-4 eggs a day now, up from 2-3. Erm... eggs are in their fourth day of incubation. Everything's steady and uneventful. Nice freezing fog this morning, beautiful sunshine.

Almost hit a skunk the other night, that was fun. It was snowing heavily and I swerved to miss it, missed it, and then realized I probably shouldn't have swerved given that the roads were slick and I had the entire family in the car. Plus, the little bugger is hanging around the barn now, cheesing off the cats and generally stinking up the place. Not sure if that's newsworthy but it's all I got.

Ya'll ready for the storm tomorrow night? Sounds like some areas will get around 6"! I sure hope that'll be the last of it! I'm ready for it to start warming up!

If it does what they say it's going to do, it will throw a wrench in our week. We've got high school orientation for my oldest son (which has already been rescheduled once because of snow), robotics practice and then the competition in Traverse City. All that and the snow too. Fun, fun, fun.

Ahhhh, all's right with the world! Except Sam hasn't offered anyone coffee yet. I was so excited I got 7 eggs yesterday!! Hope it keeps picking up. We're suppose to get 5-9 inches of snow. No, I'm not ready. I've got to make sure my hens are all taken care of, and Krisrose's as she isn't ale to take care of her critters right now. So, after I take her to PT, I'll have to go thru her coops and make sure to fill up all the feeders and waterers. Gonna be a busy day. Take care ........

Had gone back to sleep after chicken and goat care, since I worked a night shift last night, hah. But the doggies decided there was to be NO SLEEPING for the human. At least today is a day off!
