FTA: If you are unsure, I remember when I first started with chickens, I took one of their books in the store and looked through and some books have pictures of what the chicks look like.

Heat lamps are a considerable danger - one of the reasons they should not be used unless absolutely nescessary, such as with younger chicks. All lamps should be secured in 2 separate ways, to 2 different points on the lamp, using metal chain or cable. Do NOT attach only to the metal loop on the back of the lamp. Clamp lamps should also be tied off. Plastic can melt, so don't rely on plastic zip ties. Metal chain is inexpensive and durable.

Exactly, normally mine is well secured, it was my fault for moving it and not unplugging it when I changed my waters. Very scary situation. Just glad that i was standing right there and wasn't out filling the water in the kitchen

You don't say what "local" is to you, but the family farm and home store in Richmond had Indian Runners the last time I was in there (Monday)

I went to the Fall Fest and they had some beautiful ducks there. All kinds of breeds.

This may sound kind of strange, but I hope I can take in some orphan Mallards again this year. Not that I want to see any orphans, if they are found I can take them in.

I don't know who that may be. Its not the two farms where I work. But there are at least 5 large dairy farms in Sparta, so it can be any of those farms. Thanks for posting it.

I'm running into issues. We're wanting to get meat chickens in the spring, and meyer is far and away the most affordable place to get them from (that I'm finding), but I'm unable to get the number we are wanting (50-60) AND a late April/very beginning of May ship date. The best I can do is about a week and a half into May, and that would put us into July for 7-8wk olds, and I'm t afraid of the heat since we live on the east edge of a field.

McMurray is about $1/chick MORE than Meyer. Townline about $0.70. Cackle and Ideal are either sold out, or somewhere between McMurray and Townline. Are there other options for sourcing that I'm just not finding?

have you checked out the Freedom Ranger Farm. I think they were posted on BYC las yr. don't remember the price, but they were very good birds and good people to work with
