Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Gladahmae, I wouldn't be overly concerned about excessive heat in July when trying to order chicks. In the unlikely event that heat should become a problem there are measures you can take to prevent overheating. You may also find that for a fryer size carcass that the birds are ready for slaughter at 6 weeks.

Coffee is going down rather well this morning and I am trying to ignore the siren call of the cake sitting on the kitchen counter. While I currently weigh 5 pounds less than when I was a drill sergeant in the army, the weight isn't distributed in the same places it once was. I need to lose a few pounds and cake is addictive. Each time I do a line of cake I tell myself that this has got to quit.

I'm going to go down to the shop and check the temperature in the brooder so help your self to the coffee. The cake is on the counter next to the coffee pot. It's a spice cake with cream cheese frosting so help your self to that as well.

NOT NICE, I think that is my favorite cake,,

had a possum in my run last night, left prints in the snow, must be a young one as it came right through the 2x4 welded wire, don't have the electric wire up yet
one reason I put all the food in the feed cans at night. try to discourage visitors, there is always some on the ground but not enough to feed any thing larger then a mouse,or ten

lisa and girls I feel your pain, i just went thru putting down a sick hen and was so up in the air like you were, was glad i did after i opened her up and seen how sick she was. and really changed the dynamics of the whole flock.. calmed everything down.. they were picking on the sick one and now they are all so docile.

have a great day everyone, and drive safe if you have to go on the roads.

I'm running into issues.  We're wanting to get meat chickens in the spring, and meyer is far and away the most affordable place to get them from (that I'm finding), but I'm unable to get the number we are wanting (50-60) AND a late April/very beginning of May ship date.  The best I can do is about a week and a half into May, and that would put us into July for 7-8wk olds, and I'm t afraid of the heat since we live on the east edge of a field.

McMurray is about $1/chick MORE than Meyer.  Townline about $0.70.  Cackle and Ideal are either sold out, or somewhere between McMurray and Townline.  Are there other options for sourcing that I'm just not finding?

Gladah- not sure how they compare pricewise but Cedar Creek sells them.

You will probably pass pretty close to me on your way.

After a training session at MBG, I'll stop by TSC and pick up some chick feed and what not for the new peepers that I'll be getting on Friday. I can't believe that I'll be driving north of Flint to pick up chicks.

Hmm, I didn't think it was a contest. So do the favs make one crazy or do you have to be crazy to start with?

Or is it one of those contagious things that passes from person to person?
