You could be right , the black one? They are hard to see too well on the phone. Love the cochin.

Yep. I pulled them both from the breed pages. Mottled is Large Fowl Cochin. Black is Large Fowl English Orp. I love both of them. I don't care if they have feathered legs, strange combs, yellow or white skin, etc. I just want any chickens that are their shape.

so.... birds might be getting my dinner and I might be getting Pizza... I am a tester type and love to try new things in my head... yeah this didn't turn out LOL Was going to be a homeade pasta sauce... I was out of olive oil for roasting the cherry tomatoes in the oven so I used a little balsamic vinegar. Yeah bad move...way to bitter for me... I tried sugar added to no avail. I will let it cook down and make sure of the final taste but maybe the birds will like it haha

Oh no! Yeah, vinegar is a very sour taste. Add its acidic nature to the acid of tomatoes and you'll intensify it. It might be a good remedy for chickens, though.

The day started off nice and sunny and my BLA finally came out of the coop. She laid an egg yesterday as well. It has been some 6 months since she laid or ventured out of the coop. Maybe she knows that there are some littles in the brooder. She needs a friend or 3. Or maybe the ducks are coming back and she wants to be out to greet them.

My chickens enjoyed those sunny days we had. We collected 7 eggs yesterday from 11 hens! We haven't had numbers like that since the fall. Today we got 5 but I'm not complaining; still more than we've been getting. Today is day 13 on the incubating eggs. Waiting is difficult.

I purchased my seeds for the garden the other day. Totally forgot the bright lights chard though. I plant it every year, love the stuff. I'll have to track some down around town. Meijer didn't have any the last I checked, just the red and the green. I suppose if I had to...

A couple of days ago I found some eggs in the vacant stall in our barn. I don't have any chickens besides the babies in the brooder so I can only assume that one of the neighbor's hens likes my barn better than her own house. I didn't know how long they'd been there so I just got rid of them. Well today there was a fresh egg in the same spot! I haven't seen her in or around the barn at all, sneaky devil. But heck, I figure if she wants me to have her eggs I'd might as well use them, lol.

However, now I know that their birds are not only coming into my yard (I've seen the tracks in the snow but never seen them in the act) but hanging out in my barn. Are there any health or safety issues I should worry about when I move my chicks outside? They'll have a coop and fenced in run but I'll let them free range while I'm outside to watch them. Just curious I guess. What's proper etiquette when it comes to other people's chickens hanging out on your property. I don't mind a free egg every now and then but I don't want my birds to be at risk, nor do I want strange chickens getting into my garden. Thoughts?

(They just seem so happy ) Daughter, Mom on bottom. Lost her to a heat stroke last summer, was my pet :( I was thinking on breeding to a cochin, but i have what I believe to be show quality porcelain d'uccles that i may try instead. (If i get the feet feathers in, it would fill out the bottom........ The mom seriously had to have had 5-6 inch butt fluff! And both carry their necks hunched which makes them look round too ) I wanted to breed for shape and personality, then refine color later down the line. And breed for very small birds, small large breed.

I have pics of my neighbors birds in my coop and run. They have on occassion made deposits. This year, though I normally would say I dont mind, I am going to be reconfiguring the yard so they can't visit. I want to get my faverolles going good, and don't want to have to worry. Lol.
