Anyone know where fuzziebutt love is? Haven't seen her on in a long time.

Yup, still around. Read, but most days i'm very limited. I got a job, moved to family's; looking for a different job (with predictable hours, weekends OFF) and trying to pack still, driving an hour both ways; just not enough time in the day to job hunt, apartment hunt, pack, and go "thrifting" for housewares all at once! Whew. Scored some good deals lately, so the "force" is with me

I make my own saddles out of whatever scrap fabric I have. I try to find a matching color to the chicken so that it's less likely to be seen as threatening or interesting to peck at, as much as I'd love to have my girls in the latest fashions.

.......Those tiny sew-on snaps are no good. Make sure they're the kind you hammer on.

I make mine, too. I agree about the color; but i do use patterns, just make them muted country colors Probably depends on the bird. My pet hen had a fetish for lace, she loved it! No one bothered her over it. I have used snaps in the past, but has to be the good name metal ones if you do. Those plastic ones are JUNK! I got the hammer on kind this time, but haven't had the time to sit down and do any saddles or diapers yet. (Gonna have a house chicken soon )

Oh, and it's not exactly crazy but i did recently acquire RED highlights too

And darkened the base color to a medium brown. So not too crazy, but just a smidge rebellious i suppose.

I don't care to judge, because if there's anything that i've learned over the years it's that it don't matter who you are there is always someone to pidgeon-hole you into a "category" and judge you. Age, color, gender, clothes, music, taste, whatever. I almost died about 4 years ago. Woke up with a new perspective on life. It's too short to worry about "the other guy", that's for sure!

Almost forgot, i haven't tried it yet but in "mary jane's farm" magazine i read that steaming fresh eggs for the amount of time that you would normally boil them made the shells slip off easier; sounds easy-peasy! A steam insert would be much easier to get the eggs out instead of fiddling around trying to grab them with a spoon; then you could just sit the thing into the cold water too.

That magazine is found at tractor's supply, it's an every other month one that sells quick though.

Following Alton Brown's direction I just placed 24 eggs in the oven set at 325 degrees. In 30 minutes I will take them out and place in a ice water bath. From there they will go into the smoker. I'll let you know how they turn out.

I'm playing around with some colour pallets and planning what to do this year. So many projects, so little time.

I followed the egg baking instruction to the letter. Preheated 325 degree oven, bake, 30 minutes, plunge in ice water. Did all that and they were quite done. As per what I had read they did have small brown spots on the shell but not on the peeled egg. I think 350 degrees might have worked better. Now that they are peeled and I have a cup of coffee I'm going to put them in the smoker.

Just stopped by to say hello. I am a new member from Suttons Bay, Mich; that is north of Traverse City. Ihave 15 hens and rooster. and I'm thinking of getting Indian runner ducks.

I run a historic farmstay inn where my guests come for historic dinners, classes and overnights. They love my chickens!
