Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Good morning MI.

I had a good night at my grandma's last night. My aunt & uncle were there as usual, and my nephew and his wife. My sister, other nephew, her boyfriend, and his son also came for dinner. They haven't been to Thursday dinner in quite a while and it made for a full house. Loved watching my nephews and kids all play various games of cards, dice, and chess in the livingroom. My aunt made some potatoes casserole stuff with mushrooms, onion, ham, & BACON in it. Yum...

Loving all the chick pics too!

Glad you had a good time. I miss our old family gatherings. We used to get together every Saturday at my grandparents' farm for a potluck dinner with the entire extended family, like 20-30 of us depending. If it was snowy, we went snowmobiling and if it was sunny and warm, we sat on the picnic table and drank out of pint jars. If it rained, we stood in the barn. But my grandfather passed away a couple years ago and my grandmother is in a nursing home with dementia. She doesn't remember anybody so...

Our aunts and uncles, cousins, spouses and their kids don't gather anymore without my grandparents.

Good morning all. As you can see from my last post, I moved my chicks to a bigger brooder box. Every morning I have found them huddled under the ecoglow and when the lights come on, they rush out and eat like I had been starving them! This morning, I found one chick on top of the ecoglow and the rest were under it. She seemed fine. They are in my basement which is only 50 degrees. I was suprised that at only aobut 10 days, this one chick was sleeping away from the warmth. Unusual? I hope she was not kicked out!We shall see how it goes today.

Happy Friday BTW :)

Happy Weekend Everyone!

Someone laid an almost-white egg last night. A big one, so I'm confused since I thought all my layers were brown or blue/green layers except for the polish and the houdan and THIS egg is bigger than anything I've collected from my brown layers.

2 of the girls also tried to get turned into chick-sickles last night, but I went out late to check on them and was able to let them back into the coop. Hubs really needs to get the timer on that door fixed!!!

My husband is thinking about the add a motor for our coop. Does any one use this ? If so do you like it, any problems?

My ducks have started laying eggs again! Yummy for baking with!

I took the Mama and the kids out to visit the rest of the herd! And in the sunlight, their gorgeous blue eyes really stand out! Especially on the little boy!

He is a very nice looking boy!

My mini 'donkey' haha.

Amy, I would be concerned that sand would radiate cold in the winter, and would freeze solid. Fiber beddings, while they may still freeze up, act as insulation and as a heat sink. Maybe in the summer it would be OK. I prefer the deep litter method.

The floor in my coop is sand, because thats what the ground is here. In the winter I have lots and lots of pine needles layered in it. Seems to be working just fine.
Thanks for the replies. We did deep litter this winter. It worked well for us, and my garden will be happy after that bedding composts in the bin. I had never heard the phrase "heat sink" before, so I looked it up. Good to know.

dascountry, do you remove the pine needles in the spring, or do they break down in the sand?

Stacykins, she really does look like a mini-donkey! My 4 year old son can't stop laughing at your photos. He thinks they're baby goats are pretty great, too.
