Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Another stellar day of egg production. Nine eggs today including a perfect green egg from Gravy. That is the third blue-green egg in 4 days from the little BLA who hasn't laid since early October.

Shows YOUR 'husbandry" of your chickens is producing quality. Hatcheries just want to sell.... not keep or feed them at optimum for the birds as we backyarders that care do. Be proud!

Been awhile again! Boiling sap and remembering giving away my syrup at chickenstock last year. Saps flowing strong this year! All my critters- Toggies, flemish's, chickens, and Mr. KC the duck have soring fever. Still trying to decide if I want to bring bunnies to CS this year? Nobody seemed interested last time I was on. Well, take care peeps, seems like everyones a newbie to me now except Laura, Silly, Kimmie, Nova, and a few others.
Hey there do you still have the Cattle Dog? I had to give mine up to a rescue because of bitting my husband, after being bit 20 times he said enough. She was such a great dog except for that. Someone adopted her right away so I am happy about that.

so........no one answered my random question about the TSC coops sturdiness or lack of......

Does that mean the whole idea was nuts? There really is a way to do a "for looks" one cheaper??? I can do functional, it's the "pretty" that i have trouble with :p All i have to work with is very basic tools.... I thought about beadboard, or thin board similar to what you'd get off a pallet, but got stumped when it came to making the edges pretty and figuring how to secure the hardware cloth without the screws being overly visable. I had really good ideas, too, if i could do one. (Or is there someone who has tools and wants to build a coop with me?) I'm looking at the thing as i would a piece of furniture, which essentially it will be if it has to be inside.

Since my breeding program was based on personality primarily, i HAVE to keep at least the one hen to be my "eve" for any future flocks. Anyone that remembers my basketball hen that i loved, this little pullet is her second daughter and if she had blue markings instead of black would BE her mother. (My little blue and buff hen i'm holding in my avitar, she was the one with the 5 inch fluff! That bird lived to be held, waited every day by the door for me. Had a heat stroke last summer with the horrible heat wave, wanted out of chickens until i held her daughter )
So a touch of desperation here.

I had to move for personal reasons, i need the aviary/coop before i can move into my own place; that's why i was looking at the TSC ones. Right now i'm driving an hour each way just to care for my birds! So time is not on my side here and i'd appreciate any comments/ input!

Hi Fuzzy did you check craigslist? Maybe someone who builts coops can do a fancy one for you, or maybe get a book on coops find one you like and have someone do it. But could be a lot of money, or maybe take an old piece of furniture and make a coop I saw one on pinterest they made a coop out of a dresser it was cute. I check around.

Ekta the serema hen is the girl we got from Theron. She is a hoot. She will come out from under Skeeter, get some grub and drink, then BURROW back under Skeeter, and get the chicks back under her. Then Skeeter will stand up, shake out, and a chick or two will fall off, she'll get a drink and nosh, and go back and SIT on TOP of Ekta. LOL. If I had the time to just sit there and video them until I caught them doing this stuff, I would... BUT I am never ready with the camera when they are in motion.

I pray you do! Just the visual made me laugh till I cried

The pics of the little chickies are so adorable!!!! My family thinks I am nuts but I don't care I love chickens!!!!

Nova, that can not be happening, chickens just crack me up. I can't believe the broodie will let another broodie burrow under her and even have her chickies under her to funny, you need to get a movie of that and put it on youtube!! Love it

It wasn't very warm today but the sun makes a big difference. On the south side of our house we have a walk out basement and retaining walls. The septic is also in the same area so there is a bare spot along the house and above the septic. Everything else is still snow covered. Today I made a sawdust path from the front of the house where the chickens will walk through the snow, down to the back. Then I had to escort the first few chickens and show them the way. About a third of the chickens ventured out. They loved the dirt. I have a great picture of a chicken dust bath pile up. I think there are 17 chickens in the picture.
400

I sat and enjoyed the sun and the chickens company.

Hi TC, how did your surgery go?
Went very well thanks - he sewed it up so nice, no, wait, he glued it so there would be minimal scarring. The incision is doing great, but got a horrible sore throat from the incubation (I lost 3 lbs, probably mostly water though).

I've been trying to catch up on posts

I am envious of you all. Nova those babies are so cute. Has anyone done any studies on "WHY" people get hatchitits? I wonder if I could get a government grant to hatch eggs!

I am getting some Silver Grey Dorking chickies next month.

Back to "catching up"!
