Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Today is somewhat a sad day in our household. Our main rooster decided today was the day he wanted to leave his flock! We got him when he was 8 months old, and while he was not really aggressive, he had his moments. He would buck up on my husband and our daughter a few times. He never really bothered me that much, but I never gave him reason to. But today, while enjoying the wonderful sunshine with our 18 month old son out with the chickens and goats, he decided today was the day he didn't want to live anymore! I say this because he decided to make our son his new "hen", and when he realized he couldn't do that, he went after him just like he was a rooster and tried fighting him. Needless to say, we will have a lot of Rooster Noodle Soup in our freezer...

Finally some decent weather! I cleaned out the junk from my garden and then let my flock of 7 week old chickies (plus one turkey) hang out in there and eat all the lovely worms and bugs I disturbed. They scratched and ate and enjoyed the sunshine right along with me. They heard the neighbors roosters crowing and one of my little guys crowed back! So cute with his little baby voice. Then some Canada geese flew overhead to go to our pond and the chickies took cover like a bunch of pros. It's so neat to watch their instincts kick in even though this was their first trip outside.

DH and I finished the coop, cleaned all the barn stalls, and brushed out our crazy shedding horse. A busy day for sure, now time to get ready to relax having dinner with some good friends. So glad DH took a day off work for an extra long weekend :)

Tweety my little ham will always poses for camera.

What a beautiful day!! Hope you all got to enjoy some of it! Spring is in the air.

I've been cleaning up after my two dogs every day all winter long. So my yard is pretty good. Raked it today of the shavings and straw that got thrown out with the snow when I shoveled their run. Chickens are enjoying the beautiful weather.

Up early this morning and headed to Flatrock to flish the Huron river. Fifteen minutes after setting our lines David pulled this 7 1/2 pound steelhead. The fresh fish haven't came up river yet so this male had been in the river since last fall. Tomorrow 1/2 of him will be on my grill.

Wow! Congrats! It was a beautiful day for fishing!

Oh no...! Sorry you had to lose your rooster

, but good call, he needed to go. There is such an excess of roosters around that nobody needs to put up with one that doesn't know it's place. He might understand the reasoning for a mother hen, but he really should have been more concerned with mother bear! Hope your son is ok.

Florus was attacked by Rod Stewart... Rod Stewart got him cornered in the broody coop. I found Florus on his side, under the broody roost with his head at a cocked angle, Any ideas to help him? Its a neck injury, but he is able to eat and drink on his own. He did get a bit worse after he escaped confinement in the garage and went back to his coop. I think Rod musta went after him again. But anyway...

Ihawes, might I suggest no rooster until your little ones are much older? I am very happy that your boy is ok. BUT roosters and toddlers do not mix. Just saying. Can be a terrifying experience for both parent and child when a roo goes bat crap on the child.

About the late pipping on day 23? 24? One of my hens had chicks not hatch until day 25. I was thinking the same as you, they were never going to come, did something go wrong. Well anyway, glad you gave it more time. Hope you get a good hatch out them.

Nice dinner you have there Sam.

Poor Florus I wonder what could have caused that? Something out of place but how would you fix it? I hope he just snaps out of it.
I noticed that you have babies in there I was wondering when I can put my hen and her babies back in the coop?
