Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Hi CR and welcome to BYC and the Michigan thread :D

Love the Dog TV at the end

You might want some additional ventilation, maybe across the high front side, especially in the summer. Birds need a surprising amount of fresh air even in the winter, and frostbite and respiratory infections are more likely with inadequate ventilation. You may also want to have access to the run part of your coop at some time - it would be a great place to put water in the summer, or for if you needed top retrieve a bird.

Hi and thanks for your comments!

I actually do have ventilation all the way across the front and back of the coop. Here are some pictures:

I also have access to the bottom of the run, if you look in this pic, you can see the 4 wing nuts that you remove to take off the panel and get in there. Both front panels are removable.

Thanks again for looking!

starting two new projects today: sprouting barley and fermenting feed. trying to see if this will make the food better utilized by the bird and less waste.... I hope anyway!

Just back from Ypsilanti and the FRC State Competition. Rick Snyder made a surprise appearance.

...and that's all I'm going to say about that. But it was an awesome competition otherwise. I put a youtube video up of the last qualifying match for my son's team. I'll just post a link to it if anyone's interested rather than spam the chicken forum with robotics.
They didn't make it to the elimination rounds but at this level, that's not completely unexpected since they were having glitches with their robot. You can't stumble here.

Took some pictures of my eggs today. I separated my green, blue and very pale eggs from all the regular brown ones for the food bank. I didn't figure that since they wanted to make it look like they came from a supermarket that they ought to have green and blue eggs included. They're so pretty when all gathered together. The photo does not do them justice. 13 dozen in the fridge and that's AFTER the nine eggs I used between the omelet and the brownies I made yesterday. I'm thinking a self-serve deal maybe, a cooler out by the road, might lure the shy in to buy eggs? There was a house back down in Monroe Co. that did that and I was much more willing to buy their eggs than the house that was closer, that had barking dogs and owners who seemed bothered when we came for eggs. Then one of their yippy dogs bit my husband's leg. Needless to say, he got the eggs for free... But yep, I preferred the cooler by the road and never meeting the chicken owners. *Introvert* Maybe that method would get some new customers though.

I picked up a mixed lot of 13 chicks and a partial bag of starter/grower mix (free!) today from a Craigslist posting . . . A very nice lady wanted them to go to a good home so I volunteered, lol. 12 were pullets - Isa Browns, Barred Rocks, Black Giants, and 1 Rhode Island Red. 1 is a little white straight run polish. I can't tell yet if he/she is a tiny bit frizzle-y or not. But he's cute! My mother thinks I need to join a 12 step program for chicken addicts, lol. But she doesn't complain when I bring lots of eggs for deviling to the gathers!

to the newbies!! Great place to chat and learn. Wish this weather would be more spring-like! Took the tarp off so hopefully this wind will dry out my run!
