Deep cleaning the coop today and my ladies no where to be found. Then I found them. Hard at work sunbathing while I'm hard at work cleaning their coop!

What a life they lead!!

Holly, wouldn't the fabric get caught on the hens nails as they scratch?? Just wondering. We had sun this morning and then it went away.

But right now it's not bad out.

I saw Battam Silkies at the farm store. They are week old chicks. My current ones are 6ish weeks old. I know I would have to keep them separate for some time, but if I get the silkies, is there any hope in the future that they can go together? I have Easter Eggers and an Orpingtons (is that the name?).

I have two chicken grooming questions and wasn't sure where to ask.... so I will ask all of you first.

Last week I trimmed beaks and checked feet. A few birds have claws past the point of using a dremmel tool. Do you use dog nail clippers on them? Do they have a center like on a dog?

Second, how do you trim a spur. This is the problem.

The spur is starting to press against his leg. I was told if I just trim it with the clippers it will be horribly bloody. I don't see how I can file it down with the position it is in. So I'm looking for some advice.

I also bought some skin so soft for their legs as recommended on here. The avon lady wasn't the least surprised as she has another customer who buys it for her horses.

Hello everyone, and welcome to the new folks! Last Wednesday I made a fast trip to Birch Run in the rain, and picked up 33 (!!!) chicks from John Blehm. They are culls from his show Chanticleer and Americana breeding program. love them! All healthy and doing great; I could care less about the finer points of comb type, etc, for show. It's beyond time to clean out the coop, but not in the sleet today. Mary

Hi everyone I'm new here. I live in southeast Michigan. A few years ago my family got 4 chickens to help with the clean up of my after my other birds and we never thought that we would fall in love the way we did and all the positive things that come from owning them. Now they have stopped laying and we are looking for a few chicks to start having eggs again. If anyone knows of a place to get some in southeast mi that would be great! Thanks and have a good night.
Welcome

check craigs list, also there will be some nice chikens at chicken stock in June
About flooring: inside, I have straw on concrete. It does have moisture and lots of work to keep nice for my Ladies (and the 2 drakes too). About straw, last year i was getting huge clean Round Bales for i think it was only $15-20 from Farmer Hart in Bancroft. My outdoor pen was grassy and pea gravel, that's all gone. This year my plan is landscape fabric topped with more pea gravel.
All your babies are cute and one last question...
Anyone else have floods? Looking forward to some sun tomorrow. Oh, who is in charge of games at CS? I have a great one to pass on!
WATER, WATER ,EVERY WERE, roads are flooded, basement is flooded, run is just a muddy mess, cost us a fortune to get the yard to drain decently , still fills with water but dries up much faster then it used to

I am expecting birds from John, I here they are very pretty

Well the sun is finally out, cant wait for it to dry outplan to separate my old birds from the new tonight. find out who is laying and who isn't,I am pretty sure of 2 that are laying soft shells, 5yr olds,

Tap I think you would have to trim a small amt. at a time. I did see a you tube clip once on removing spurs. take hold with a pair of pliers and twist fast. Have not done that here . But it can be done.

HH, you can keep the bear up by you, OK, don't think I care to deal with bears
