Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

It is the 2x4 opening type fencing. It comes in 3,4 and 6 foot. I have seen 4' by 330' for under $190. I will need at least 2.
As long as its around 12 gauge it should be good.
Raz.......... will you be coming back? any one hear what the verdict was yet?

I thought these were cute..

Good luck to Raz today. Has anybody heard from him?

Naglady!! You are going to have an AWESOME hatch this time. I know it!! :) :)

Gladahmae - BLRW's are gorgeous! Good luck!

So, I've been stalking & gawking, but not posting so much. Finally have my computer issues sorted out (I hope!).

We have put ALL our chicks & ducklings outside, and our momma hen with her babies as well. It feels so nice to have the house back!

Here is momma (Jewels) and the 9 babies she hatched. She is being a wonderful mom. :)

I just had the extreme pleasure to view this pair of Sandhill Cranes out my back window. So when God gives you such a rare gift, you take a picture & share it. :) Simply gorgeous.

What a good surprise. Do you have cranes every year? Love the babies as well.

For keeping chickens??? I think you would have got less for growing pot! This is just NUTS!!!!
I agree. That's not left, its crazy. We have enforceable laws on the books against animal abuse, creating a hazard, and smell, Having a law against owning a specific animal is a violation of our civil rights.

It is nice to know that people care about me. Thank you all.

I'm just back from the courthouse.

The sentence is:
30 days in jail
6 months of reporting to probation
$905 in fines
Pay for the court appointed attorney
Comply with all city ordinances.

But the judge was "nice" and suspended the jail time. However, if I fail on any of the above details I will be thrown in jail. And since there are more ordinance violations next week that pretty much assures that I'm breaking the last condition.
expected the fine , (any thing to get your $$)
not surprised about the suspended jail time (to let you know "they are serious")
do not understand the probation,--------- have to report and do a pee test every so many weeks??

It is at the Gratiot County Fair For Youth Fairgrounds in Alma. There is a sale area and I am thinking that RIRJen might be bringing some silkie chicks to sell. I will be there in a red shirt with white footprints on the back.

I don't know if I'll have any chicks...maybe a couple. I have a beautiful black rooster (only fault on him is his comb is a little too red in my opinion) and I'd be willing to pair him up with a blue hen. :)

I will be going to FowlFest and bringing my Faverolles to show, Might have some pairs and chicks forsale as well depending on how full my truck will be
can't wait to see you there. Might need to pick up a couple chicks from ya. I think I will have some serama pairs, laying chicks, and a pair of sebastopols.

Looking for a few broody bantam hens near Macomb Twp, MI. Timing is about May 18th. Will be raising some bobwhite quail for release and through research found that raising them this way seems to improve their chances. Otherwise they don't breed in the wild, don't know how to forage well and aren't aware of predators. Thanks!

If anyone has some mature hens of a breed that tend to go broody maybe I'll try that as long as its by this weekend. I might be willing to travel some, possibly going to Fowlfest this weekend

Good morning Michigan, cool but nice here this am.

Mish, moving a broody will usually put her off and stop her from brooding.
When I lived downstate I had wild bobwhite quail around my home. Their biggest issue in Michigan seems to be the weather, southern MI is the very north end of their range and they do not tolerate bad winters well.

Raising quail for release in the wild while laudable usually isn't very effective. Even the bottom tier counties of Michigan are at the northern edge of their range. While there were scattered population pockets of quail in the bottom third of the state when I was much younger, most of those a gone.
Qua
Quail depend upon habitat that is practically gone from our state. Fencerows provided both food and cover and the farming techniques of today have eliminated those. Quail are a grasslands bird that feeds, nests, and roosts on the ground. Our winter snow depths may survival doubtful. A single deep snowfall can decimate a flock.

I have heard people claim that our increased turkey population is responsible for the decline in both quail and grouse but if they would just think about it they would realize that both of those species have different habitat requirements that no longer exist in our state. Quail need old fields and meadows where they can feed on native grasses and forbs in close proximity to brushy cover (fencerows). Grouse are a woods bird that require young growth to feed upon buds. This mean trees less than 20 years old.
