Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

What do you have down i your run to keep the ground dry? I think the issue with ours was just that it was on ground that doesn't drain well..but I ended up putting down pine flakes because it was so poopy and muddy and gross at times that the birds just didn't want to go out. ;/ It was always meat to be a tractor actually, but hubby has his way and ideals of wanting to do things, and insists on needing heavier duty tires than I think we do, so the cost, and him installing them, because I am a visual person and couldn't picture the way he was describing it, have held us up on actually getting it moving. I'm hoping it will be to it's rotating home within the next month, but we'll see.

The people that built this house shaved off the top of this hill to make a flat spot for building. Unfortunately it makes for lousy lawns and gardens, but a really good chicken run, which is mostly sand. I also sift out the yuck/feathers/stones/shavings with a fishing net lined with 1/4" hardware cloth, but that is just because I am a little OC... It drains pretty quickly, unless there are flood-worthy rains like this past year. Then I chase chickens around in the rain, at least the serama roo (thanks Theron) that is too silly to go inside and wants to do a Rocky/Stallone rooster dance with me.

Well, our first puppy was officially adopted! Very nice lady took the powder puff boy, they're a perfect match. The little girl may be going home Friday. It's bitter sweet. Hairless boy had a buyer but they had to back out. I surely wouldn't mind keeping him but I don't dare tell DH he's staying, I'm already on thin ice over all the new chickens and rabbits I've acquired this spring. Lol. But how can you say no to this face?

Morning, all!

I want a young Rhode Island Red or Leghorn rooster to govern my growing flock of pullets of the same kind (plus a few red New Hampshires). Is anyone going to have one to bring to chickenstock? That would be more than awesome!!!

I have an extra brown rose comb leghorn rooster, but I don't know if i'll make it to chickenstock yet.

sorry to hear that, supper hero design was what I had in mind too, sure hope they can get his allergies worked out

Sarah, that is great - congratulations

My soil is heavy, thick, cold, rocky clay, and turns into a sea of mud with any significant rain or snowmelt. Starting in the fall I add hay or straw to the run as needed to keep their feet above the wet, and in the spring it starts breaking down on it's own and disappears by midsummer. The birds love it and spend hours picking through and turning it over.

So here are the two surviving chicks out of my "salmon Favarolles" eggs -

The person I got them from was really surprised too, she wondered if her husband had mixed the up eggs!

Said she would send me some more, but I am close to being done hatching for now and will probably just hold off.

Good Morning everyone! Still No chickee's outside for me, Hoping to work more on my fencing debacle tonight after work. I told my hubby what needed to be done as far as it goes and he said "Really? Maybe I should have researched this more!" Ya think?? Anyways, looks like it is going to be a beautiful day here in Central Michigan

ehhh you're doing fine....... You could sink a post and staple (hammer in kind) the fence to that and put a gate up. May find something on craigs list or you could make a frame for the gate out of scrap wood and staple the fence to that. I have part of my chicken yard fenced with only 3' fence, I just hop over it half the time! If you need some ideas, go to the top of the BYC page and look under coops. All sorts of ideas on there!
