I was lucky enough to pick up some chickens from RaZ. Thank you so much! They were immediately busy pecking scratching in my run once we got home. They are beautiful!

It has been a while since I popped in over here.
Hope everyone is well.

I am wondering if there is anyone near Livonia/ Farmington Hills that has chicks that could spare a pair.
I have a broody that has been sitting for a month. She has an egg under her with dead baby in it.
I feel terrible. She has been so faithful to her egg with no result.
I had another 2 of her eggs under another broody: one that developed funny and never hatched, and one that hatched and is super healthy.
I am not picky on breeds, but that they are healthy chicks

If you were closer to where I'm at, I would say swing by the Family Farm and Home and get some of the adorable Polish chicks that just arrived. Soooooo cute. I was very proud of myself for walking out without any . . .

Raz they will do fine, they are all used to being together.

I'm sure that they will be fine. They went home with a loving foster Mom. Even still, they were my girls.

Am I the only one here who is gardening impulsive? Every year I get itchy to plant my garden once May rolls in. The last few weeks have been so nice, I thought I was going to be fine to plant before the Frost-Free Date.

And now I've got 1/2 of my garden covered as best I could with plastic and sheets and tarps (the other half will have to make it. I ran out of covering material, lol). Hoping my heat-happy stuff doesn't get too angry and decide not to produce (eggplant and tomatoes, I'm looking at you!)

"Gardening impulsive", what a great phrase.
I too, fall into this more often than I care to admit. I suggest waiting another week or 2 and then plant or seed right next to what you already have.

They will be fine together - they are used to each other. I started out with 4 Isa Browns and 3 BSL as chicks 3 summers ago - they still do great together. The BSL are larger but the Isas are more pushy, lol.
I was contemplating fostering some of yours for you until you can have them again, but it looks like you are doing pretty well. Your ducks are doing fabulous - they LOVE the pond. I've started leaving the coop open overnight (I have a watchmule for protection) and they head for the pond first thing every morning. My other ducks never liked the pond so it's great having some that do.

I just love watching them play in there.

I think both of the Runners are drakes (so I guess I'll be in the market for a couple hens). The Rouens are getting quite large (they boss everyone around, too! Even my Muscovies). Once they are laying, if you ever want eggs, just say the word.

Duck math is nearly as bad as chicken math!!!

The FF&H is the only place around here that is still going strong with chicks. If I were closer I would offer to pick a few up for you and meet you part way even. It might be worth a Sunday drive for you (I know . . . it's Mother's Day, though). They had lots when I was there and they are superdooper cute!. They also still had turkeys, banties (an assorted lot), and a few other varieties of chicks. I think they sold out of their guineas (there were only five left last time I was there). The doc that I work for has been begging me to get guineas. I keep telling him no, they are too loud and too flighty. His family raises any chicks I get for the first month or two - until they are ready to go out into the chicken tractor and then into the big girl coop. They can't have chickens where they live but they would love to have a small coop and a couple hens. This satisfies their chicken addiction. And they buy most of the eggs my hens produce to share with their in-laws. Between them, my coworkers, and a Craigslister buying chicken and duck eggs - I didn't have any left for me this last week, lol!

I was going to plant the cool weather stuff this weekend but it just seemed way wrong when the white stuff was coming down, actually still is here.

Happy Mother's day to those who are moms. Today makes me think of and miss my dog Hera. She was born on mother's day and 13 years later died on mother's day.

Looks like I am going to end up with only one chick from this entire hatch, great. I would love some advice on what you all think might have gone wrong. I have had very successful hatches from this Hovabator Genesis in the past. I ran the humidity around 30-35% the entire time, then elevated to 75% at lockdown. Eggs were rotated with a turner. One thing I noticed that was different from all my other hatches is that when I candled the eggs, instead of the blood vessels covering the entire area of the egg, the bottom 1/2" to 3/4" of the egg was perfectly clear. The chick that I helped hatch had this clear orangish-yellow tinted jelly all over it and actually got stuck to the bottom of the incubator which was awful, I had to pour warm water on her for several minutes to get her unstuck and then hold her under the faucet to get it all off. The other pipped egg died with its beak sticking out last night, and this same yellow gel gooped out the hole around its beak. I wonder if there is any chance of the other four eggs hatching yet, or if I should just pull them to candle, and break the shell at the air cells to see if they are alive and stuck like the other two. The two that pipped were on Friday night which was right on time for hatching. I think I am done with shipped eggs...
