Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I took the last 4 layers to BFM. Her roo is in his glory. Prancing and dancing, bringing the new girls food treats and doing his best to impress them. What a showman.

The yard seems so empty now.

Good afternoon all! Hope all the moms had a great Mother's Day. The day started out good here, church then home to work on the chicken tractor - which has really turned into more of a coop...it seems a little heavier than I had imagined it would be...it is an A-frame I sketched out first in my head, then on paper. DH has been a good sport about helping me along with it. I think the kids are actually going to be disappointed when we get birds as they are having a great time using it for a hideaway....pictures to follow soon, I promise!

Got a call at 11pm last night...never good when the phone rings that late. The police were calling to tell us that one of our storage units had been broken into.

There were 14 units total that had been broken into...all were big units....now keep in mind that the large units are randomly spaced in amongst the smaller ones (from the outside you have no idea if the unit is 10x10, 10x20 or 10x30). Interesting that someone seemed to know the big ones...anyways we lost some stuff like our really nice tent, brand new canopy, and fishing gear. Apparently some of the other owners had some really big losses. I am counting us fortunate that DH had brought my brand new mitre saw, the circular saw, rototiller, bikes, etc. to the house last week otherwise I am sure that those would have been taken as well. It is a gated facility, but who knows if they will ever find out who is responsible. Needless to say, last night was not a restful night.

Love the goat pictures..what a doll! Everyone's chicks are getting so big!

Tap - so sorry to hear you have a rough week ahead. I have prayed for you to have peace and strength in the days ahead.

I am starting to really get excited for Chickenstock. I think that it has finally hit me that this year I might actually get to bring home some birds!!

Have a great afternoon!

Lemon almost squatted for him!

I will post pics soon

Amy, my experience with crossed beak a bird is that they don't often get enough food into their bodies to live long. I had one that kept crossing as she grew... I even trimmed it to try to help, no luck.. She eventually died over winter because she just couldn't scoop up enough food/water. Slow starvation is crewl and if I ever got another crossed beak bird, I would cull it right away. Some people have had them survive longer than mine. But, esp with it being a roo, you don't want a bird like that breeding and passing along bad genes.
Silly, thanks for the input. I don't expect the cross beak to live to a ripe old age. It spends a lot of time at the food dish, and I noticed that the deformity is causing it to breathe differently. Still, it seems to have a good quality of life. Once that declines and/or if it turns out to be a roo, we'll have some tough choices to make. Our birds are like our pets and while I can't stomach even thinking of culling it, I certainly don't want it to suffer.
As far as breeding, we're already way over my self-imposed limit. I wouldn't be interested in letting hens set fertile eggs, and would need to get rid of get any cockadoodlers out before they did.

It wasn't the greatest weekend and not looking to be a fun week ahead. Sick hen, have to put our dog down and DH has surgery. So feeling a bit low I did what all good chicken addicts do.... put eggs in the incubator and ordered chicks.

My only excuse is not only will chicks make missing the dog easier for me but also for my son.

Now that the dreaded s word is gone I hope to plant some garden today.

What a rough time for you right now! I hope you and your son adjust okay to the changes. :(

Raz, it's got to be a weird transition for you, too. Good luck finding the seabrights a new foster home.

Goat pic are adorable

Well, since I got just one response to my quest for a buddy chick, I ended up going to FFH and brought home 3 buddies for my lone chick. I have no idea what they are. Two are very tiny, one double their size. Came home and put them in with lone chick and the two tiny ones scurried under lone chicks wings. Lone chick is being a mamma to them!! Lone chick was eating and I tried to take pic of the others and she hurried to the tiny chicks and got them under her wings! Babies raising babies. Lone chick is only 7 wks old!! The other chick seems terrified! Afraid to move. Hope she relaxes soon. Guess I need to think of some names for these chicks.

Turned out to be a pretty day.

Ceramic floor is out. Just need to sand some to get the glue off. Pergo floor is out. That was easy. Carpeting is out. That was easy, too. Hardwood floors will be installed Monday.

Got to wash all the walls down before that happens, tho. Every room is layered in dust.
