Opa, the garden looks great. I just have 6 tomato plants in pots and they are doing well. My flower beds are looking better than they have in years too.

K, I need a chicken apron/saddle what ever you call it. Who makes them? One of my girls is the roosters favorite girlfriends and she's getting pretty banged up ( no pun intended ). So if one of you makes them could you kindly drop a link to your etsy store or where ever I might get one? Thanks!

As I struggled to bring the couch into the house, someone called the cops and reported that I had parked my truck on the front lawn.

That is just plain nuts!!

I don't know where you are located but the Family Farm and Home stores in Newaygo and Twin Lake[?] have a monthly swap meet.

Sorry to hear about your goat. Such is life.

Since we are sharing garden photos, I realized I hadn't shared mine with anyone yet (except for the new fencing). So here's what I got so far.


The peas, kale, broccoli rabe (mostly eaten already), carrots,
onions, lettuce, nasturtium, chard and greenie beanies in the
back. The cabbage, cauliflower and brussels sprout are under
the row cover.


Corn and potatoes (almost ready)


tomatoes (four kinds)


shell beans (kidney and some other variety). The sad peppers
are hiding on the left) and tomatillos waaaaay in the back corner.


zukes and winter squash


herb garden (mint, lavender, dill, cilantro, thyme, oregano and
parsley). The chives might be in there somewhere too. The
basil is in a separate container with some cherry tomatoes.
Ran out of room.



ETA: you can see the beginnings of the new coop foundation in the background of the shell bean picture. Hasn't gotten very far this summer.

Opa, your garden is shaping up. I'm paying close attention to your tomato system. You son's (right?) friend would want a young silkie roo would he?

My daughter thinks she heard the silkie crow this morning. We knew it was coming. We had some backup plans, but they aren't working out. I'm sorry for the repeat (promise, this will be the last time), but is anyone interested in this 4 month old pet quality white silkie cockerel? I will bring him to you. I will give you $10 (and cookies?).

Are you getting a necropsy done? That would be the wisest thing to do, in order to find cause of death.

As for Araucanas, yea, they're tough. I love mine though. My flock is large fowl, with blues, blacks, and splashes. I haven't hatched many thing year, to be honest. I really should pop another group of eggs in the incubator.

I am having a hard time with culling my old birds and I know it has to be done soon,

I'm sure ALL of your gardens look better than mine. It's probably too late, but I still need to plant all of my squash/watermelon/pumpkin/cucumber seeds. I hope they still sprout. I figure they will since they usually grow SOOO fast.

In other news, my "accident" Cornish X died this morning. I got her with a batch of chicks from a lady on Craigslist who got them from Townline Hatchery. It was supposed to be an Amber Link. Anyways. She was getting big so I integrated her with the main flock almost a week ago. Saw bloody feathers on a few chickens when I let the flock out this morning and sure enough, there she was, dead, laying in the coop. He leg was picked pretty clean. I knew she wasn't going to live much longer anyways, but I would have rather used the meat rather than her just being wasted.

Ahhh...it's definitely not all rainbows and sunshine when you raise chickens (or animals in general).

do you have tufted? And she had issues in giving birth and got a c-section.... She started doing better then just died

Yep. Most of my hens are tufted n rumpless. Both roosters are double tufted and rumpless.

Poor girl. That is sad she was starting to get better, then passed. Did any of her kids survive the birth?
