Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I'm sorry, i'd have lost my temper and they would have called the cops on ME for what i'd have done. That whole situation is ridiculous, that the dogs keep going and yet they aren't fenced. He'd have bought lots of fence for that amount of money! I can't stand when pet owners don't keep pets in check, it ruins it for those of us who DO.

As a "hippie" i resent that article. Yes there are idiots out there, but most of the idiots i know are readily educated. And there was no mention of the lack of veterinary care and lack of space in those large commercial facilities! Most of us who keep birds are the kind of people with grit, maybe it's a Michigan thing? I wonder how many birds are in our shelters? Or what the adoption fee is for that matter; i like hugging them too ;)

I think that I am looking at things a little different the most of you with regard to recouping damages for the chicken slaughter. I think it should be what the chicks cost and the cost of raising them to the age they were killed, or the cost of replacing them with birds of the same age; but not both. Charging both is actually results in a profit. It's sad the birds were killed but if the dog's owner is willing to pay, charge him costs to date or replacement. I'm sure the dog's owner feels bad about the situation, but once he thinks it through and realizes that you actually made a profit his attitude could change from remorse to resentment.

That's how we're looking at it too. We talked about it after DH got home from softball tonight. I can't, in good conscience, ask him for that much money even though I may be entitled to. I'll be happy when we've been reimbursed for the loss, and will do what we need to to hopefully prevent something like this from happening again.

Going back to the ACV... I add it to feed daily, water too as needed. It's good for *YOU* as well its all about alkalinity vs. acidity in bodies. I think it is the higher the alkalinity, higher the inflammation factor, which in turn leads to negative metabolic processes. Just be sure you get Bragg's brand, with the mother. If you are at all interested, check into Paleo diet, I know that I read a very interesting article (with research cited) discussing the alkalinty/acidity issue on one of those Paleo sites. Sorry I don't have a link.

Glad, I'm so sorry about your birds. This line of thinking makes sense to me. If someone broke a window on my house, I'd expect them to pay to replace it. Not pay to fix it and for a whole other new one. I hope he figures out how to properly contain his dogs. You must be feeling very concerned about the remaining flock.

I went back a few pages...I'm not seeing a suggestion of gaining a profit form the loss of the birds. A fair restitution is in order, especially if this was a second occurrence (as indicated). It also appears that the owner of the dogs admits to a measure of responsibility but I wonder if they are committed to a remedy. I hope they are.

Good luck with what you do.

As I think about the situation of receiving money for replacing your birds at the age they were at the time of the slaughter. I agree with Raz as it was your work raising and caring for the birds.
It is obvious the owner of the dogs, hasn't done anything to correct the problem since the last time they got into someone livestock, so I wouldn't hold my breath that the dogs' owner will instantly become a good citizen by caring for his animals by containing them from running at large again.

I would let the owners' know that animals running at large can be shot by the owner of the property when they are caught in the act of destroying farm animals. Few years ago in the Tri-City areas of a small pack of dogs running at large that killed or maimed animals had to be humanely put down due the injuries received in the attack of calves, sheep, chickens. The article said AC or DNR said the running at large animal (s) could be shot on site of the destruction of owner's animals when caught in the act.

Just food for thought. I am very sorry for your loss and anyone else that goes thru the shock of finding your animals dead from someone's running at large animals who chose to kill. It is really the animals owner who should have to replace your birds, repair the fencing, etc. Hot fences make good neighbors. Stepping down off my box. People who don't respect other peoples property really gets my blood to boil.

Funny you mention the "human" factor as when I was googling, unless you specifically add "chickens" into the search, most of the hits are for the human benefits of daily ACV use. I did order the Bragg's thru Amazon (price was reasonably good & with Prime free shipping & it'll be here tomorrow).

DH has the Paleo book on his Kindle so I am sure I can find the info you mention in it.

Spaz was much more herself last night. Though anytime Bigboy comes near her she runs! Was glad to see her munching away in the yard, though...

Again, thanks to everyone for your advice, help, and similar situation stories.

i'd say if they are reasonable about it and are willing to pay, i'd go with one or the other. if they become a problem, especially if it happens again, and/or you end up taking them to small claims, then i'd go for more. not sure that will actually work, but that is what i would probably do.

and also, remember any repairs you had to do to your setup. any damaged fencing, coops, tractors, etc should be included.
