Butterfly Bushes are great for feeding not only Butterflys but also Hummingbirds , its a constant show from July right up to frost. They have big clusters from blue to almost red, and have a LOT of clusters. If they are well fed they get big, I have seen them 12' high. I have three here, new ones, and next year will add more. They are big enough that several Hummingbirds can feed without aerial battles. And I see the rarest of our Butterflys besides the old favorites.

Its good to be back Candy ! Hard to keep up with all of the posts though, but will try.

My story:
When I was 10 and growing up in Metro-Detroit, my grandpa gave me a day old chick for my birthday. Now that I know more about chickens, I believe she was a seabright, and realize how lonely she must have been. We were her flock when we were outside, and she'd follow me everywhere.
I wanted to give my kids a similar experience. 2 years ago, a group of folks in my city were trying to overturn the ordinance that bans chickens. It went to the commission, and failed by a slim margin. Last year, I didn't want to wait for the commission makeup to change, and started researching breeds, determined which would be the best for our family and purchased 3 chicks. Our Orpington turned out to be a roo, and was rehomed. This spring, I purposefully picked up 3 bantams, and then weeks later very impulsively 2 more. Of those 5, one developed a very severe cross beak and died last month, and 2 were roos who were rehomed. In the coop are a silver laced Wyandotte, a black australorp, a white silkie, and a mille de fleur d'uccle.
The kids love the chickens, I love the chickens, and even my hesitant husband love the chickens.

Clorohexedine, does that have the same effect as iodine? Thanks for the info. Great reference.
Chlorohexedine is better than the iodine, from what I have been reading. The vet gave me the chlorohexedine to use on Whispers. You have to dilute it to light color for the cleansing. Also, I forgot to mention I used the Vetericyn Wound & Infection Care. I would spray that on her wounds also.

Please post the pictures and update.
Thanks.

Lisa and girls
I'm finding chlorhexadine is becoming more popular with doctors for wounds. It's also called hibicleans. Not sure of spelling.

I was gathering some salad greens for the girls and when i got up to the fence this is what i saw..she was hanging there feet off the ground, hooked under her beak in the soft skin. I hurried and got the camera because how do you describe this.. and then took the picture released her and she is fine, one drop of blood, but acting fine.. will keep a eye on here.. hindsite i should of got her down and not take the picture.. that hook is coming off there.. she must of tried to fly in the coop and missed and slid down the rail.. she sure is lucky.. could of been alot worse. Scared the crap out of me..poor girl..

I used to handle the classified ads at the Sturgis Journal. A customer in White Pigeon called to place an ad for 25 free hens. She had been in tge egg biz for 40 years and was just tired. Hubby and I had talked often of getting hens. So, I told her to forget the ad, I wanted them.

I gave 5 each to a couple friends, because I was sure 25 would be too many. The first night, we lost 1. Still not sure if it got out or something got it.

Just before winter, my sister called. She had 7 hens and a roo that needed a home because they had been left behind at their rental property.

This spring, 1 of the friends we gave 5 to lost their job and couldn't feed their birds, so we gained 16 more hens.

Then we decided to try incubating because we were getting way too many fertile eggs from the 4 hens who range with Roo. 2 of them finally went broody after we lost 2 batvhes in the bater. We got our 1st success on July 6.

We now have 7 chicks with the broodies, 16 in the brooder, 22 production hens, 6 chicks that are 14 weeks old, and 20 eggs in the bater. We plan to cull back to about 30 for the winter.

Oh, the poor baby! Kinda funny since we all know she is ok, but, phew...that coulda been a disaster ! She probably couldn't do that again if she tried, but agree, hook has got to go. You're right, nothing but a pic could describe THAT situation :)

Bee Balm is good too for attracting the butterflies and hummingbirds.
