Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Good morning All

I havent been on since last Sat and wow a lot is happening !

Re the good friend and his avarice nephew, hang in there, you are a blessing to him that he needs.

I still have two Delaware pullets, 3+ mos, nearing POL I want to rehome, sweet, social, eat from my hand and always come up to be petted. Next year I may add some back but for now two breeds is a full plate for me.

My Iowa Blue youngsters are doing well and the Icelandics too, though the youngest are going to finish feathering in a short fall. But they will have the big brooder pen for their first outdoor pen.

I can put light bulbs in all pens and thats the plan. Plus deep straw bedding.

Life goes on as the seasons progress.

I am with Opa on the old bones but, that beats not being here,

that said, time for another morning coffee .

It's a dreary morning today after getting lots of rain in the night.
I checked apples trees yesterday and a couple are ripe. This year they just don't look appealing. They are small and look blighted. I think there are about 2 -3 trees that look good but are not ripe yet. The deer have been feasting though. Yesterday we had 12 deer in the back about 7am. It is so fun to try and figure out the group dynamics.

We lost our male guinea yesterday. Just gone, no feathers, sign of fight or anything. My guess would be coyote again but it is just weird to me that they are doing it mid-day and crossing an open field to grab a bird. This time I will not be replacing him. I will incubate some guineas come spring and start over then. The poor females seem a bit lost.

I've been working on a pheasant coop and pens, slowly. I was trying to decide how to be most cost effective on the fencing and then the netting. Long story shortened.... We had another house trying to sell, it flooded, insurance company first said it wouldn't pay for all then gave the money to the morgage company, ended up torn up and foreclosed on. After sitting empty and torn up for almost 2 years a lady we know who is a plumber bought it and called us to find out about it. While talking she mentioned she will be taking all the fencing down around part of it and wondered if we would like it back. There should be just the right amount for the pheasant yards.

And there are feathers everywhere and less eggs as a larger part of the flock starts to molt.

I forget earlier, Nova you have been talking about the cold hardiness of the Phoenix. What I had been reading said they were fine for winter except that because of their single comb they needed to be watched for frost bite. What do I need to do different for them. I wasn't planning on any heat.

Opa, thought you would like this

At least it's bigger than the 4 we caught on our perch party boat trip. I'm getting anxious to go over to the Muskegon River. Since the heat is delaying the run and driving the fish in the river into deeper holes where they only hit early in the morning, I waiting for a few days in a row of cooler weather.

Was supposed to go for a nice long walk today. Oh well... rain

"Good News Everyone!"
I got some eggs in the incubator and an offer on some chicks.
Thanks to the offers for the help in re-starting the flock!

Remember, if anyone has the black skinned chickens let me know, I have room for a few more.
Just need to see how many eggs are developing before I meet my quota.

Jake, My brother was looking for Iowa blues but he couldn't find anywhere that had them. Do you know of somewhere to get them from or did you order them as eggs?

What kind of black skinned chickens are you looking for?
