Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I haven't been on in a looonngggg time! Forget trying to catch up. I live in northern Oakland county. Does anyone know of a good place to have chickens processed? I need to do it very soon. I have a crabby neighbor who isn't thrilled with my crowing roos! They've never been the friendliest people anyway. The township laws aren't very clear either. Last year when I didn't have a rooster they came over to complain about crowing. Um wrong place.
Anyone have any good places to get zoning info?

My Emus somehow got out, and I caught the female, and put her back, but was not able to find my male. I was driving down the road to work, when I spotted my male, I tried to catch him, and he took off quite fast, and lost him. I was late for work, so had to give up, until I got home from work. While I was working, I got a text from my dad saying that all the fruit growers are mad and threatening to shoot him if I don't catch him. By the time I got home, my family and the growers had caught him and tied him up. My mom promised one of the growers that I will get rid of them. I don't want to sell them, but my mom gave her word to the grower. So, with a heavy heart, I have to sell my pair that I have hatched and raised. They are a year old, hatched May 20 2012. Very people friendly. I want them to go to a good home. They got out because the cows had messed up their fence. Caught my cow walking right over their 6 ft fence like nothing. Arrgghh!!! But I was planning to work on fortifying the fence this week. Too late. Been crazy busy the last month. :( PM me if interested.

I took these pictures of them when they got out last week, because I was putting the turkeys back in the coop at 11:00 pm when I got home from work, and forgot to shut the gate. So they were in the front yard in the morning, eating wild berries.

Fattening your birds: a friend if mine puts her meat birds in a smaller enclosure with a light on them 24/7, which she said tricks them into eating more, thereby bulking them up. Seemedto work, as the birds we slaughtered were quite meaty.

Plus, since they are bulked up, they are not able to run away much (at all, really), making catching them for chopping time very easy.

Today is starting off less than I would like. I had spend quite a lot of time typing today's post only to have it disappear into the ether. So here I am retyping everything and doubting that I will be able to reconstruct all of the pearls of wisdom I had previously written.

The first coffee of the day is sitting waiting for Hope to get up. She goes every day to care for her twin granddaughters and I want her to have the best coffee possible before embarking on what I would consider an impossible task. I much prefer my roll as grandfather. I can give the grandchildren a few hours of my time and then send them home. Hope's oldest treatment granddaughter will be eleven years old and I suggest we take her shopping and let her pick out whats. So this past Sunday I took Hope and Felicity to the mall, gave them some money, sat in my truck reading, and now she thinks I'm one of the world's best grandfather .

As I sit here fighting the effects of a summer cold I am reminded that the Chinese name their years/ year of the dragon, year of the horse, etc.. For me I think that this year will be remembered as the year of the doctors. First we started with Granny's hospitalization as a result of being given a contaminated steroid shot. The ensuing surgery, debilitating treatment, and numerous doctor visits that still aren't done.

For me I had to have a olecranon bursa on my elbow drained and it appears that it is going to need further treatment. Later this month I have an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon to discuss knee and hip replacement. If that weren't enough, this past Saturday I received a packet of forms I must fill out before my appointment with a rheumatologist in October. I've had to fill out less paperwork to purchase homes than they are asking. Hopefully they will come up with an effective treatment for my degenerative arthritis.

I am reminded of an old Yiddish saying "der mentsh trakhts und Gott lachts" or man plans and God laughs. I think that the best thing we can do is laugh along with him. Since we live in an age of incredible medical advances all we can do is seek treatment and hope for a satisfactory outcome.

Good Morning Opa. I'm up today too. Been fighting a head cold for too long. Went to the dr last week and he said I didn't need an antibiotic. Meh, forget it. Anyway, enjoy your coffee, I hope you and Granny feel very improved soon. Hang in there. It's going to be a hot one today.

Gaitngirl- I didn't forget about you... Just was preoccupied with the aforementioned head cold, etc... What's your schedule like this week coming up? Maybe we can meetup?

The Emus are awesome!! I wish.
