Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I think summer colds are the absolute worst ones to have. It's not that they are more severe, it's just they they occur at a time of the year when you prefer to be outside. When it is snowing and 20 degrees it isn't that difficult to lie around trying to get well. When you are missing out on fully enjoying weather like we have had for the last few days having a severe cold is akin to losing to a thief.

A trip to a drug store to obtain relief is a taxing exercise in and of itself. Row upon row of brightly packaged elixirs and potions offer relief from which you must select the correct one to combat your unique symptoms. Since I no long suffer from aches or fever I attempted to find the one which would offer the quickest return to normalcy. The labeling on one reminds me of a commercial where green globs were immediately evicted from residence in one lungs. Severe cough suppressant with an expectorant, yep since I have a horrible cough and I expect this to work, this must be the one for me.

Forty dollars lighter I head home in anticipation of returning to a normal life. Which ever adman wrote the instructions should be forced to take these chokers. Easy swallow caplets, my foot. While I probably can't prove it, I'm sure once in my mouth, these things not only doubled in size, then turned sideways to insure their ends would scrape on my throat as I swallowed. In spite of taking the medication faithfully I've noticed no real difference from colds where I've taken no medication. I'm pretty sure that it takes what it takes and the only improvement truly delivered is in the manufacturers net worth.

Yesterday I checked on the progress of a mason contractor on one of our projects and then picked up some treated lattice I needed for another job. I had no more than finished loading my truck when my old farmer friend called and asked if I could meet him in Howell to handle some of the paperwork necessary to reverse the control he had given his nephew and to insure hiscontinued independence. How could I do anything other than agree?

The paperwork once handled quickly and I thought I'd soon have my day back on track then it was recommended that he go to a bank in Stockbridge to take care of more of his finances. The paperwork there didn't go quite as smoothly but was necessary and when complete required that we return to the bank in Howell to finalize everything. I'm pretty sure that everything could have been handled without my presence and I think his desire that I attend was more from a desire for company than from a legal need.

However, at each place we went he would introduce me as his best and most trusted friend and then continue on with relating how wonderful the previous day had been for him. When you witness how just a little effort on your part can bring such happiness to another, you discover than you have been repaid many times over.

Morning Opa. Just wanted to let you know what's working for me. I'm normally not a big tea drinker, but I've been having success with Yogi brand Immunity Support Tea. I hope you feel better.

Since this is what I consider to be a reasonably public forum, I guess anything that I might post on any given day is basically for anyone to read and to take whatever I said or posted and do whatever they wish with it or not. Whatever. So even if you aren't Opa, and you have the bug too, if you feel so inclined, the Immunity Support might help you too! Looks like rain is coming this am, so if so, that's a good excuse as any to relax a little with a cup of tea. Or coffee. Or ginger ale. Whatever. :) I hope that each and every Michigander out there has a peaceful and healthy day today.

So ever since I lost the Jersey buff tom turkey to raccoons, I've been feeling sorry for the remaining Royal Palm turkey. The two toms used to hang out with each other and occasionally fuss, but mostly try to out-handsome each other. Now Gilbert is reduced to trying to romance the geese, and they just do not fully appreciate his good looks.

In fact, it's downright sad how he follows the goosers around continually, and they pointedly ignore him. So I've been half keeping my eye out for a likely-looking turkey hen or two, but knowing that I also need a new coop if I'm adding new turkeys. (Currently Gilbert coops up with the chickens, and after he healed up from his raccoon attack, he has gone in willingly at dusk every night, which impresses me greatly with his ability to learn). So I have lately been researching building a hoop coop with cattle panels, because it just might be within my skill set. But I haven't actually gotten anywhere with doing it. So Gilbert continues his hopeless pursuit of those adorable geese.

Then a week and a half ago I got an email from one of the neighbors on the road. Seems her back-fence neighbor had come back from vacation and found a white peahen had moved onto their property! And hee, hee, I am strangely enough the only one anyone knows anywhere around with any poultry at all. So suddenly I am the "expert." Ha! But of course I do have a secret weapon. I know exactly what to do. Who ya gonna call? BYC, of course! I posted over at the Peafowl area. And, no surprise, a bunch of super helpful peeps walked me through the whole thing. Here's the thread if anyone is that interested in the details:

But for anyone who just wants the short version, we were able to catch her and she is in quarantine in my barn right now. And she is quite lovely.

If her original owner can't be found (the neighbor did try several different ways to find the owner with no luck but someone still might claim her I suppose) I am happy to keep her. But now I have two singletons that need friends of their own kind. But she's soooo pretty!!!! Anyway, if anyone knows of any especially friendly hen turkeys or peahens (I'm thinking I'll stick with another girl) keep me in mind, and I'll try to get in gear on the housing situation here....
I have some royal palm hens. PM me if you're interested.

Anyone who wants to attract bees to their yards, just plant sedum! I have several plants and they're all covered with bees of all kinds. Beautiful day to work outside. No rain yet.

We have chicks!

For those that weren't around/don't remember, this spring I sent my lavender orpington roo to live with Brethren and in exchange she saved up eggs from her lavender hen and her buff hen. As a bonus, she threw in some Araucana eggs. 21 made it to lockdown, and so far 4 have hatched and another is pipped. The first 2 hatched yesterday, and technically speaking, TOMORROW is day 21! We've got some early birds! I believe the count is 3 orpintons and 1 araucana, with a 2nd araucana pipped.

The incubator is at BIL's house, so there's no risk of me stalking it for new pips and chicks all day long and driving myself crazy. (And, on a side note, if anyone local to me is wanting some orpington chicks, there's a good chance I'm going to have extras)

Looks like I'm not the only one hatching chicks this late.
Of the 7 eggs, 4 hatched, 2 died but the other 2 are doing well.

I'm not local nut I love the orps. Just saying...
