I think summer colds are the absolute worst ones to have. It's not that they are more severe, it's just they they occur at a time of the year when you prefer to be outside. When it is snowing and 20 degrees it isn't that difficult to lie around trying to get well. When you are missing out on fully enjoying weather like we have had for the last few days having a severe cold is akin to losing to a thief.
A trip to a drug store to obtain relief is a taxing exercise in and of itself. Row upon row of brightly packaged elixirs and potions offer relief from which you must select the correct one to combat your unique symptoms. Since I no long suffer from aches or fever I attempted to find the one which would offer the quickest return to normalcy. The labeling on one reminds me of a commercial where green globs were immediately evicted from residence in one lungs. Severe cough suppressant with an expectorant, yep since I have a horrible cough and I expect this to work, this must be the one for me.
Forty dollars lighter I head home in anticipation of returning to a normal life. Which ever adman wrote the instructions should be forced to take these chokers. Easy swallow caplets, my foot. While I probably can't prove it, I'm sure once in my mouth, these things not only doubled in size, then turned sideways to insure their ends would scrape on my throat as I swallowed. In spite of taking the medication faithfully I've noticed no real difference from colds where I've taken no medication. I'm pretty sure that it takes what it takes and the only improvement truly delivered is in the manufacturers net worth.
Yesterday I checked on the progress of a mason contractor on one of our projects and then picked up some treated lattice I needed for another job. I had no more than finished loading my truck when my old farmer friend called and asked if I could meet him in Howell to handle some of the paperwork necessary to reverse the control he had given his nephew and to insure hiscontinued independence. How could I do anything other than agree?
The paperwork once handled quickly and I thought I'd soon have my day back on track then it was recommended that he go to a bank in Stockbridge to take care of more of his finances. The paperwork there didn't go quite as smoothly but was necessary and when complete required that we return to the bank in Howell to finalize everything. I'm pretty sure that everything could have been handled without my presence and I think his desire that I attend was more from a desire for company than from a legal need.
However, at each place we went he would introduce me as his best and most trusted friend and then continue on with relating how wonderful the previous day had been for him. When you witness how just a little effort on your part can bring such happiness to another, you discover than you have been repaid many times over.
