Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

what is your job for the government if you dont mind me asking? Hubs works for the state but i know how much fun the furlough thing is but i prefer that to bank leave time at least.

Work for the US Army (Dept of Defense). Great job, love it. Love supporting the soldier. Just wish our folks in DC could get their act together & pass a budget so we could be a little more effective ....

Still, other than not getting paid, having the rest of this week off, especially with the weather forecast, would really let me get a lot of stuff done; still got more garden canning to do, harvest taters, etc. (& hunt, of course).

i completely understand! He has been working his tail off to get everything in order before their new computer system for OIG goes live. In the next few days though their systems will be shut down so they can change everything over so there will be a lot of stuff he cant do. He is thinking about taking a day or two to help me get yard cleaned up, trees taken down, etc. before winter.

FYI, the Coho fishing by stream was just awesome this year. More awesome is the stuff I smoked yesterday. My brine was salt brown sugar, and the maple syrup I make. 6 hours of apple wood smoking over coals. I think it's the best smoked I've ever made. Must be the weather. Now to break into the cherry wine that's been in a carboy for almost 4 months and see if it's ready to bottle. Of course where I'm going with this is a little wine, smoked salmon, and maybe some cheese (that I did not make). Maybe next year I'll make some goat cheese and that'll round out what you call self-reliance almost.
sounds yummy, and I don't even like fish

Thanks for all the assistance on the apples. I am off to make a volcano now! Darn books of kids concoctions.
valcano's are fun, made some with the grand kids last fall put some skinny juice cans in cement and had them cover them with stones, took a week to dry but they had a ball making them boil over

I swear every time I try and take pics one of the crx's come running.
see how cute I am? please don't eat me

always work to do, take advantage while you can

It's pretty funny... the same method for making volcanos is the same for making a small animal gas chamber. Oh... if only I had known...

ANYWAY... My kid... the youngest that is was left to his own devices when I went to go and get the oldest kid from school. So a near 5 yr old was left in the care of his granny and his daddy. Neither was paying attention (this bothers me) and he had a charger/power cord for something, and decided that swinging it around like a helicopter woudl be a fun thing. He hit the tv with the box end that plugs into the wall. SO, instead of telling someone, he shut the tv off right quick and went about his business. We were out making the volcano when the daddy asks, what happened to the tv, you better come look... I did, and Aiden took off. Ok... What ever, I have insurance purchased that is supposed to cover this sort of thing. I asked that when I bought this ins.. I asked the jerk at best buy, what happens if my little ones throw something and damages the screen, cuz, kids throw stuff. Jace was 5 at the time, and Aiden was 2. And they are boys... rough house, things fly... Oh yes yes, it'll be covered, so I bought it. Well, call best (worst) buy and they say, oh no... it doesn't cover physical damage. What? Call corporate, and corporate says, oh yes it does. Call my local back, and they say, or no it doesn't. So, now I sit with a messed up screen. Local says all they can do is prorate my ins and give me the balance... $27 bucks. They won't fix it, cuz its physical damage. They won't give me a new tv because it physical damage. Corporate says they have to fix it or give me a new tv that is the same or equivilent of what I have. Local says nana nana booboo, boy did we screw you.

SO... to fix the screen... May as well get a new tv. Same cost with the screen and labor. I will not buy from best buy again. I will either get a refund of my ins policy amount in the end or the tv fixed or new. Just have to get to the bottom of whose policy is honored... Corporates policy that says yes physical damage is covered, or locals that says, oh no, just componet damage from thing like normal usage wear or dust type things. HEEELLLLOOO??? Why the heck would I buy a policy for THAT? My home owners covers lightning and water damage should the roof leak.. GAH!! What a circle jerk.

John, I have been experimenting with cheese - so far did a good Juusta Leipa (a finnish cheese still made in the UP and wisconsin) and a cheddar that I will know more about in maybe a month or so. Wish I could get some goat milk.
