Anyone have any info on this years Fowl Fest?

I'm going to try. I have a funeral to attend on Saturday that will probably last well into the afternoon so I may not get to go until Sunday.

Chickens LOVE hostas! I use to have a beautiful border of hostas BEFORE I got chickens. Now... I have sedum which they don't seem to like, thank god. When my chickens were young, I use to have to go to the two houses next to me and rake the mulch back into the flower beds. Seems when they get older, they stick more closely to home

I've lost nearly all of my hostas to the chickens. I didn't realize they would decimate them! I had several varieties - now I'm down to a few that one of my coworkers gave me when she divided hers. No more rare types for me - just good old green and variegated.

I didn't realize that chickens like hostas. Mine are all ok. They haven't touched them, yet?!?? When do they do the most damage? My original flock are very well mannered in that respect. But the younger ones go wherever they want!

Thanks, everyone. He, unfortunately has adapted to pet loss. We had 2 labs--1 passed of old age, 1 got loose and got hit by a car. And we have had many cats. We take in a lot of strays. Now, with the chickens, we lose 1-2 a month to predators.

It helps that he is 17, too, and more able to process the 'circle of life' stuff. Still sucks. Absolute lover kitty. Found him in the weeds, so starved he was too weak to rin away. Then he lost a leg to a combine during harvest a few years ago. (How he earned his nickname of the $700 kitty.)

On chivken news, I think I said that my pullets must have started laying. Apparently 1 of them is broody. I checked the nest by the chimney and the eggs were all warm. So, looks like we will have some very late hatchlings coming up. Now, to sneak in a candling to guess a time frame.

I have a 5 month old Choc Lab that has an interesting relationship with my 3 cats, Jinji the Queen Mother gets deference, a welcoming lick when she comes by, Sis the 2 yr old gal gets a brotherly lick as she comes and goes, Guy, her brother is the full bore sparring partner, no holds barred with each giving as much as they take, then they lay where they are, and may or may go separate ways or check the other with a lick. It is really funny.

The cats ignore the chckens, seeing them reminds Buddy that he is a bird dog. We are working on that.

I still have the trio of Iowa Blues available to whosoever is interested in this recovering breed. Two beautiful pullets approaching point of lay.And a matching cockeral.

Good neighbors are priceless!!!

I agree! My neighbor on the south has let me use his field for my cows after the neighbor on the north sold his land. I don't have to give the cows hay for another month or two!!! So blessed and thankful!

Made two paddocks. A big one for the big guys, a little one for the little guys.

Belinda is 7 weeks old and being weaned and she is taller than the jersey boys who are 4 1/2 months old!

We will have to add a hosta swap at the 2014 Chicken Stock.
