Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Thank you all.

Total - I was seriously stressing. I've calmed down now but he still has to go . . .

Holly - Thank you

1mutt - I did not remove anything. I guess I won't take a chance (I really wasn't wanting to do this myself anyway). Maybe I will research how to just breast it out maybe as Total suggested. The rescue is going to put the dog up at a boarding kennel until another option can be found. My house isn't really big enough for the number of dogs I'm currently fostering. After mine had passed 3 yrs ago, I figured I would foster until I found a dog that fit in here. One dog at a time was the plan until this lot came along. I was told they would be adopted out as soon as they were weaned and fixed but it didn't work out that way. Now it's a year later . . . We are adopting one of the dogs from the litter, not only because we love him but also because he would be difficult to adopt out with his allergy issues.

Raz - those SF 'canaries' are gorgeous! Wonderful leg feathering. My little Favie girl didn't want anything to do with people for the longest time. She would squeak, run, and hide. If you picked her up she acted like you were killing her! And then I introduced her to mealworms, lol. Now she follows me around pecking at my boot or shoe trying to get my attention. I can pick her up and she doesn't freak. Her leg feathering isn't nearly as nice as what your little girl's is going to be but Boot's (my Favie roo) has enough to make up for her lack of.

Chick - Thank you. I am still researching what's safe.

We just tied up our 2nd summer with hens, and they haven't discovered the hosta salad bar that is all over the backyard. Knock on wood. :)

Good morning everyone! I just realized I'm first one posting today. I'm not sure how Opa posts coffee pix, but, coffee anyone?

Good morning, I'll join ya!
Though I've been sucking it down since 2:30am!
Got another batch of applesauce processing at the moment..one more to go & this bushel of apples will be done!

Rooster, rooster, who wants a rooster. I ended up with three roosters jostling for position with 7 hens. One must go. Cucko sizzle. I was selling him but if I can just give him to one of you I know he will have a good home.

gaingirl... what kind of pups are they? got a photo?
As far as the duck, if you have something like that happen again, go ahead and gut and soak it in salt for a few days.

Nova- saw the other picts... they look great! Mine are contained though not happy.

Right now I'm dealing with sinusitis with my turkey flock, (lucky for them) so everyone is getting treated. Had plans to process a few turkeys for thanksgiving but that will not be happening this year. Hubby thought they were all for processing, but I told him only a few were going to be, I was trying to get a flock going for chicks raise myself in order to have birds to process next year... (I swear he never listens to me).... I have been SO unhappy with the quality of birds from the hatchery this year, lost most of them... two orders of faverolles (10 birds) and only one sickly one survived (I had to cull her last weekend)... turkeys the same way. So from now on, I buy from other people!

I have a small flock of chickens that have been kept separate from the others so I'll be processing them this weekend.

I renovated the inside of my larger coop this year, put plywood up in the inside and a vinyl floor down. Got all the cracks sealed yesterday and either tonight or tomorrow I'll be putting on another coat of paint. I hope it will make it easier for me to clean! The outside run will be set up for a load of sand this weekend as well. This is going to be my Sumatra run.

Raz, what you gonna do when that canary boy starts to sing?

As someone else who fosters, I don't see WHY another foster home couldn't trade dogs with you. When we have a placement that just isn't working in our house because of factors like livestock, small children, digger/fence jumper and there aren't any open fosters we just trade dogs. Then again, I don't know how big the rescue you're working with is....ours is on the smaller side....about 15 homes that are full regularly, and they are really good about shuffling dogs around in those kinds of situations.

I have a tie-out that we use for ALL of our new fosters where they can't even SEE the chickens. After our [former] husky killed most of our flock I don't take chances with the dogs until I'm sure that they respect the fence, since our fence is only 42in, and the run fence is only 48in. I always laugh to myself when the women who run the rescue ask how the dogs are doing with the chickens......like I would just let new/strange dogs around my birds and set them up for failure since we take larger dogs, and they're usually high prey-drive mixes.

Happy Friday everyone!

We are trying to get word out about the next Ag meeting on November 6th., in Lansing.
They are introducing the proposed GAAMP for site selection and the draft does not look good for small farms or backyard livestock.

While MDARD is either over-regulating a small scale farm or making it illegal, they are also reducing the regulations for large corporate operations. The potential is that only big farma will have RTFA protection and with virtually no oversight at all.

If you can, please join us at 9:00 at
