Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Sorry to hear all the bad stuff with birds. I know what it's like having gone through it myself. It has taught me to really appreciate my chickens while I have them. I actually know what a Merlin falcon is. We had one eating doves in our yard. It sat right there and wouldn't move. DH took the dove from it, wrung its neck and gave it back. Then he took tons of pictures. Most of the hawks have gone through here already thankfully and moved farther south.

I have a canning question that someone might have an answer to. I want to can some pear mango butter but can't find a canning recipe. Pear says 10 minutes boiling water, mango just has the flip the jar method. Do you think I'm safe doing 10 minutes in boiling water? It's pretty much the pear recipe with the addition or rather substitution of mangos for some of the pears.

If you go to www.punkdomestics.com and then click on peach mango butter in the slow cooker, it gives you a canning recipe.

Went out this morning and saw something big swimming in the pond, thought it was my muskovy(he gets out of the pen at nite all the time), but it was a deer,1st I've ever seen 1 swimming. It stood maybe a ft into the water for about half hr, so I thought maybe it got stuck in the mud and I went out there and as i got about 30yds away, it finally took off tryin to run but limping very badly, looked like back rite leg was giving way real bad. Haven't seen her since, but sad when I can't help out a hurt animal.

On another note, I was talking to a lady today that vaccinates her chicks. Being still new with chickens, is this something your suppose to do? And if it is, where's the best place to learn how and what? Thank you

Thanks for all the good wishes. I'm hoping like crazy to find my missing chickens when I get home from work.
On a related note, I've decided I need an electric component on my fence. The dogs across the way have a record of getting loose and attacking things (in fact they are only fenced now because they attacked a bike rider). However, that's just bad training and dogs being dogs. It's up to me to protect my pets, even if other people are not making theirs behave well. (Especially if others are not making theirs behave well.)
SO.
What do I need? Anyone written a guide on adding an electric fence? Currently I have them in a pen made of 2x4 posts with 5 ft welded wire attached. We don't have it buried as we close them all in the coop over night and it has a floor. Do I need to put in a second fence outside of the wire? Or can I somehow attach it to the current fence? (Or would that make the whole thing live?) Electricity is NOT my forte... (Now if you need help with Microsoft Office, I'm your gal...)
If anyone can recommend a decent how to, I'd really appreciate it.

There's a cartoon at my pharmacist,

Chap is asking the pharmacist for sunblock. The pharmacist hands him a note. Man asks what is it? and Pharmacist responds. . .

"Directions to Seattle!"

PRICELESS, LOVE IT!!! :lau

Really did get a beautiful September week there a few years back & a bit of free time to head down to Pike St., have dinner on the Sound, etc...but, most my time there was 12 hour days at work...& misty, cloudy days :D

BUT, everything is REALLY GREEN!!!!!

Tee hee! :D
that would be great. Anyone that has spent time there would totally get it!!
Truly is one of my favorite TDY (sorry, acronym crazy "temporary duty") places.
From about 2001-2010 I worked the Army's largest R&D program. Spent half my life in Seattle, SoCal (& a few other key locales).

People are great (Seattle), absolutely beautiful (tho a little more sun WOULD be cool!).

Still have Vancouver/ Alaska on my bucket list.....
