My 2 new EE girls. Roo is already strutin and cooing them through the fence. They love digging in the compost pile already. 1 has greenish legs and 1 blue, hoping the same for egg color.

Now just need names. Got the fencing to do the new duck run today also, before the pond freezes.

Everyone enjoy the beautiful day. Precious kitty, congrats on another deer. My boys finally got a chance to go out last night and look at the rubs and pick their spots out. Maybe venison in a few wks.

Congrats on your new "kids"! Yeah, the deer are definitely in rut. DH said the musk smell on the buck was VERY strong. I have to try & tie the score up 2 all this weekend when he will be busy working & unable to hunt! What a gorgeous day...really wish I were home getting rest of garden cleaned up & the plastic wrap up on run...ah, well, sitting in a hospital waiting room isn't THAT bad, especially since a BYC friend came over to the hospital & we got to chat for a bit over a cup of coffee :D

Surgery Center called me today. Check in time for my surgery Tues is 3:05. Nothing to eat after midnight! Are you kidding me????? I can have clear liquid at 7am. So, I have to get up early just to drink something. Man, there better be a huge steak waiting for me when I get home. I'm gonna be mighty hungry!

Beautiful day today!! Hope you all are outside enjoying it!

I am home and caffeinated so life is starting to feel a little more normal. I'd like to thank everyone for there thoughts and prayers. Tomorrow I go to see an arthritis specialist. Maintaining an aging body sure is a lot of work.

So, I have a composting question. I build an 8x8x4 bin out of pallets. I'm raking leaving up in the woods (yes, I must be crazy!) and shredding them with my push mower/bagger and dumping them into the bin. I've got it about 1/4 of the way full, not packed down. Should I fill it up all the way? Make another pile of un-shredded leaves for in the spring? I've never composted before, so while I understand that I need as many leaves as I can get stocked up, I don't really have a place for them where winter winds won't blow them all away.

I think I've come up with a solution to my winter-time run issue as well. I'm going to remove the fencing on the non-door ends of the meat tractors and line those up in front of the layer coop so they'll have an 8x16 fully-protected run. I'll have to see if I can come up with a reasonable way to put their food and water out there, otherwise I'll just keep it in the coop like I did last winter. I have 2 more 8x8 pallets that I'm going to lean up against the south wall where my silkies' pop door is and tarp THAT off so they also have a protected area. Because their door is on the side of the roof that sheds snow, I may have to periodically clear snow away from the bottom, but other than that it should be alright. After that, I just have to plastic off the sides of the OTHER run, and then tarp the roof. I used 1x2s last year as my batten strips and it worked well for most of the winter. We get a LOT of wind, so getting things really snug was the only reason it lasted until February.

Anyone have any ideas what I can do with six younger roosters. Good size to eat but nobody will butcher chicks around me. I'm near Battle Creek. If anyone knows a place. Or wants them to eat.

wow, I am surprised you are not able to find an Amish settlement in that area? They are affordable to dress the birds if you can find a settlement.

So I bumped up my insulation in my coop. Covered all drafts, put in a vent, and decided not to heat it this year..... They will be just fine, right? And also, on really chilly nights, do you close the pop door and vents? Or keep it open?
