I finally started the coop today. I still need a couple windows to put in there. Hopefully this will be a HI-TECH coop when I get done with it. Have any of you had any luck with those water nipple drinkers? I have some great ideas for them but I'm just not sure if they are worth the effort? the dimensions of the coop are 8' X 12". That should be enough for 10 hens.....don't you think? I am having so much fun doing this. I look at the coops page and get some ideas....I love this site!....lol
Ohhh....the electrical is for 2 heat lamps, should I need them and 3 coop lights. I also ran plugs for a waterer heater.

I have the nipples in 5 gal. pails, but others have them in pvc pipe with water running to it, for winter you would need electri tape or someint to keep them from freezing, maybe the wire they use for roofs to de-ice. I do not use mine in winter I have heated 5 gallon waterer, you don't need to heat the coop in winter but light to see after dark is awesoome, I really like having it. ....you would only need heat lamps if you had chicks out there,
If you can build a covered run, I like haveing the food and water outside, stays dryer and cleaner inside

Congratulations to all with awards, eggs, babies and all else! Condolences to those with losses these past few weeks! And to those with surgeries, May you have quick recoveries!
I have been trying to read but haven't had time to post. Kind of lurking I guess. I was busy trying to finish up"Fort Knox" and then got sick for a week with food poisoning. Didn't have enough energy to reply. There are always so many good posts here. Thank you all for information on RTF issues and for all the great pictures and posts. And to the comedians thanks to you for the chuckles and sometimes out loud laughs. You all know who you are (and if you don't feel free to include yourself, as I'm sure that at some point you did some of the aforementioned good stuff). At any rate what I'm trying to say is Thanks Michigan thread! I visit this page the most of any!
I have been busy but due to being sick for a week I am once again behind on the run. It's getting colder here in the north of Ohio too. This next week I hope to be done with it for the season. I will post some pics then maybe get some good feedback. Thanks everyone and Happy November and a special thanks to all the Veterans and Have a great Veterans Day!

This site has a real cool chicken calculator(3 actually), I just seen it the other day and used em, just type it in search, I think. I found it accidentally, don't even know how. lol 1st one-type in your birds and how many and it tells you how many eggs you'll get each yr from them. 2nd one- type in how many birds you want and it gives you how much sq. footage on your coop and run you'll need, how many inches of roosting sticks and how many nest boxes. 3rd one- # of birds and it gives you how much food and water they should be consuming ea. season.

MIchickens- looks like you're going to have a great coop, did you remember to leave space for your bed? I'm still trying to decide what I want for my peas, every time I look at something else, I change my mind. The way I'm going I'll not get started before winter really hits. I saw a black garbage bag full of alpaca wool go for $26 at an auction, I don't spin.
We have a disconnect between what local government, federal government and law makers, and people want,especially when it comes to self sufficiency. At least part of it is that the squeeky wheel gets greased and the protestors against are more vocal, but its bad when experts agree that home grown food is better for you and yet communities keep passing laws and regulations against being able to grow even your own vegetables. Every time a agri business has problems with the safety of their product, it results in more regulations against the home grower. That's crazy.

michicken the coops looks very nice, you shouldnt have to heat your coop this winter especially with all that insulations,chickens require more ventilations then they do heat..
if your planning on using a light, and not leaving it on 24/7 then use a timer and have the light turn on in the am hrs. for example from 5am - 8am.. that way there isnt any transition..
if you schedule the lights to go off at around 9pm.. then your chickens will be blinded, they cant see in the dark and may hurt themselves trying to roost. or find safety if they are not roosting,

i bought the nipples but going to wait till next spring to use them, i use a big heated bucket inside the coop in the winter.. worked good last year.
