Milford Michigan. No I haven't. Ok thanks for the tips

Today I was at TSC and one of their magazines by the counter had coop advice on the cover... But honestly, you can learn do much here that I haven't found any need to look elsewhere. One piece of advice I'll offer you is to go bigger than you think you need right from the start. Especially if you get ducks! :)

I tried making a dust bath for my chickens last winter and they never touched it. Then, to make matters worse, the plastic tub I bought got brittle in the cold and shattered into a hundred bits which I am still picking out of the compost pile.

So this is where the coop is today, not far, heheh. But it's only me working on it for the most part since it's dark after DH gets home and with me running robotics, driving my oldest to his robotics meetings, friends, Fusion, etc. I'm lucky to get a row of shingles done a day. Still, I'm really proud of my scaffolding work. I know it's not much to you men but here, I'm only 4'11" tall, not built and I made that so be impressed yeah? We're going to work really hard to get as much shingling done today as possible before the rain/thunderstorm/snow hits tonight and the rest of the weekend.

I respect the need to decrease the State's deer population but beyond that I have little interest in hunting dialog. That said, I must join in to point out that while driving my son to his friend's house yesterday evening, when each field parked a pick-up truck at its access point (and I felt fear that a stray bullet would strike us), that there was a field tucked by the expressway that was FULL of deer. Not only that but they looked like they were having a party, romping around giddily, almost like it was a holiday. It was a much needed laugh.
I have that problem picking out the wrong plastic and pieces crop up forever afterwards. Luckily, I live on a sand hill and even in winter there will be a sunny spot where they can dig in ( or is it out) & bathe. You should put your robotics club to work, give them some practical experience, maybe some ideas, and you a done coop.
It sounds like a shooting range here too, I'm not in to deer hunting and after years of having to "protect" any animal I owned larger than a cocker spaniel from the "big game hunters" that come from the city and either indulge all the way here or are just stupid, the people that stop and offer to rid me of the deer that have been feeding off my land all year don't always get the most polite reply.

There were some contentious discussions at the Ag Commission meetings over the last few months over tag limits and where DMUs would have different criteria depending on herd size. Even though DNR is overseen by MDARD, they still act as a mostly untouchable politically motivated organization and do what they (and their PACs) want to do.

You should be proud of your efforts, that is one nice looking coop. And as one of the men here, it is "much" so kudos to you.
There are an awful lot of talented people on this forum, builders, artists, hunters, teachers, and more.

Oh you country mice, the sound of gunfire for a few days once a year. Boo hoo. Down here in the city it is nearly all day every day and night. Yes, I am being flippant.
Ya'll be safe and wear that orange.
Isn't there some way to get the power away from the pacs and big donors?

I love chickens but I don't have any. I want some though
Welcome to BYC.

It was a good day. Lots and lots of leaves were mowed, mulched, collected and composted. The last remnants of the garden were pulled and I found a few ripe tomatoes. Nothing like a snack while doing yardwork.

In early spring, I got a peach tree but didn't get around to planting it until late September. It spent the whole growing season in a plastic pot before being planted. It looked like a Charlie Brown x-mas tree. So I was especially happy to see that it has set buds for next year.

Congratulations to the hunters who filled a tag. I'm a little jealous.

And if you are a sky gazer, the Leonid meteor shower is at it's peak tonight.

I'm going to try my luck hunting tomorrow morning. No deer came out this evening, I waited and waited. It was rainy and windy, and is especially so right now. Hopefully that all quits before dawn so they want to go do some browsing.

Might have to go hunting for my little pop up blind, though. I have it pinned down with stakes and rocks, but it is very, very windy right now.

While I probably will miss the entire gun season, I have enjoyed hearing of David's exploits afield. He has seen numerous small bucks, some would have been easy shots, and has opted to let them walk. The only way we are going to see more trophy bucks will be when more hunters start doing the same thing. He even had an eight point in range that he let walk. The buck had a nice symmetrical rack but only about a 12" spread. Definitely a 1 1/2 old deer and imagine what another year or two will do for him.

The old farmer's nephew and friends showed up to hunt and once again displayed many of the traits that has contributed to his reasons for disinheriting him. Since my friend wants to avoid conflict if possible he hasn't informed his nephew yet so we are trying to tolerate his presence. David came home tonight and related one more instance of what a jerk this man is. He shot a small deer late this morning that probably still has milk on its breath. He was grumbling about how small it was and that he was going to give it to one of the neighbors because there was no way was he going to waste $80 on such a small animal. What irks me is that he had to know how large it was when he shot it. So if you don't intend to use it, why would you shot it?

The nephew is 72 years old, in horrible physical condition, morbidly obese, and just had a pace maker install this summer. My old friend remarked to David that maybe we will be lucky and the nephew will die and save us a lot of problems. David suggested that perhaps a better way of thinking would be to think it's going to be easy for me to outlive him. Same result but a better way of thinking. Just another example of why I think I raised some pretty fine sons.
