if I had an aggressive hen... she would go to freezer camp.

She's a bit skinny, the hard part is she's 1 of the ones that just started laying also. I haven't learned how to do freezer camp yet either. Ty

Yes, the rooster does have frostbite. Ugh, it's just his comb tips seen to be dead.

Darn. Well, you will have to keep re-applying the ointment, it does wear off. If it's just minor tips you are probably OK. If it gets a black that spreads deeper it is infected and an emergency! But one of my roos lost tips last winter, just barest bits and was OK.

My birds won't go into the snow either. May as well be quicksand! And whoever got the idea that chickens don't feel cold in their feet- mine sure do! It is a definite look of disgust when they step into it. But when i track it into their coop it is suddenly transformed into chicken candy, go figure!

Cold is one of the reasons i like my ee's,since they have beards instead of wattles and thick short pea combs they don't get frostbite easily. Sometimes i do smear vasaline on them though, just to be safe! The one downside is wet beards; they always get wet beards no matter what type of watering device.

I snapped some more pics with my phone today while out there, so antsy to share them but don't have internet on my phone right now....... grr!

Good morning Michigan, Opa must be out hunting. Too cold for me, although it is slightly warmer (7 degrees) than yesterday.

Like most others I'm sitting here listening to the weather forecasters and waiting for the snow. We only have about 1/2" so far. I had intended to go hunting last night and again this morning but my family insisted that I not go alone and since David was working I'm sitting here wondering how I've reached the phase in my life.

Frostbite can indeed be a serious problem but usually with wattles and combs I've had birds lose over 50% without ill effect. The frozen areas will turn black and then atrophy and eventually fall off leaving the bird looking like they have been dubbed.

So I put the bully hen back in last night and 1st thing this morning when i let them out, she went right after lil ruby again. Need some advice on what else i can do. It's just the 1 hen chasin and pickin on the other, but pretty bad. Ruby is starting to molt also, so she really don't need this and my garage isn't heated, so i'm afraid if i keep 1 seperated in there to long with no other body heat, just straw, it will be to hard on them.

They do make little things so they can't pick on each other (not sure what to call them) . They slide into the nostril holes and block all their vision except looking down to eat. I had considered some at one point because I had a bully but she was super sweet with me. Someone else may know what they are called.

We are a balmy 10 degrees today. And it's snowing... I finally have the last of my Christmas shopping done so I can avoid stores! Mr. Hedgehog was the last to pick up and he is happily eating his cat food hidden in the basement. I do have tons of sewing still that needs to be done.

And a new egg layer, although not sure if it is the phoenix, silkie or showgirl.

Left is bantam faverrole, Right is one of the big girls, the little one was frozen solid.

Tap, do you get any ill effects from frozen eggs? I occasionally find a frozen, or at least partly frozen when I crack it into the skillet. It seems to cook and taste fine... Any other problems known?
