Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Two big does certainly would help our larder. Not having venison in the freezer certainly affects my budget. I sure miss the years that I would already have 8 or 10 deer cut up and frozen by now. Hopefully next season my health will have improved to where I can get back to hunting like I used to.
sounds like a wonderful day and I sure hope your arm improves fast, it has been too long already

Good luck, Opa; hope your next post details some good news :D
Think the deer are moving a bit more. DH got a decent doe last night which he gave to the landowner who hasn't had much luck. DH's muzzleloader is very accurate at VERY long ranges, which is where the deer had been showing up on this property (like 400+ yds). Said the doe he got was at ~460yds per his LRF.
Another of his friend's freezer is lacking & is running into same issue, deer on her property only showing up far away, so I think he is going to go & try & help her out today...

I have a nice large pot of split pea soup simmering to can today. Luckily I caught my mom before she went to Honey Baked Ham Co & asked her to get a "bone in" ham for XMAS dinner. While she can't stand split pea soup, my stepdad & I LOVE it. So this batch is for the 2 of us. I think my sister saved her ham bone too for me, so looks like I'll be able to get another batch done soon; so dad & I shall be happy campers for the rest of the year :D

I had to get all of the rest of my XMAS cookies off my kitchen counter. Every time I went in there, I would eat 2 or 3. Think I ate about 3 dozen yesterday (& that is not an exaggeration ). Still have a lot left, so back in the freezer they go so I can enjoy them for the next several months. I had quite the sugar buzz going yesterday, then crashed & burned about 1900. I don't think they are calorie free anymore ;)

On a chicken note, the birds actually spent most of yesterday out free ranging for the first time in a while. Took some of them a bit to get up the nerve to touch the "white" stuff, but eventually everyone was out & having fun finding "green" stuff poking thru the melting snow. Figure they will get today & tomorrow before the next cold snap hits tomorrow night.

Hi Nova. Hi Fuzzy and HI to all you Michigan folks. So sorry to hear about all the horrible weather. here in OK we've had lots of ice - beautiful but the sounds of the forest breaking around us is so sad. But typical Oklahoma weather we are going up to 60 today and then back down to 22 tomorrow. Regular rollercoaster. At least we will have one day to get out and do all the stuff in the coop and barn that needs done.

We have friends that moved to MI and live out in the wilds off the grid. They actually just drove back to OK last week after shoveling their way out of the woods because the solar wouldn't work with the cloudy skies to keep their house warm. They will head back in the spring and put in wind turbines to supplement their power. Mother nature is thumbing her nose at them I think - lol!

LOVE split pea soup!!! save the bone from my spiral hams just for that purpose

. Had lots of damage from the ice storm, my two front trees lost many huge branches, one is a maple the other is a poplar, both at least 2.5 wide. Not sure if they will survive this damage. I hope someone will buy the maple, it is tall, straight and will make some nice cabinet boards for someone. But after getting hit by lightning...then this ice storm, well...it doesn't have many branches left.
One of my EE's is gurgling at times...no gaping, no signs of gunk in eyes, nose area...been like this for two weeks. She runs out to eat treats, get water, etc...but still thinking I should maybe buy some Durmycin just in case?

Mmmm pea soup!!!
I was going to make some last night until I realized i didn't have any peas... Didn't want to run to store for just one thing. Today I will pick some up for soup tonight. Last night I made scalloped potatoes and ham with leftover spiral :)
I love leftovers!!! Breakfast will be scrambled eggs with ham too.

Split pea soup is great! Enjoy the warm spell - good time to clean some pens/coops before the cold snap next week. Had to blow a path out to the compost bins. I think we've had more snow already than the whole winter last year. Reminds me of when I lived in the Soo.

Scalloped potatoes & ham. YUMMY! One of my favorites, too. Hmmm..out of the honey baked; BUT, do have a venison ham & some potatoes here...that just might be a dinner plan :D

I have learned to keep split peas in the pantry. Two years ago right after Easter, I could not find any ANYWHERE. Think everyone had the same idea. Now I try to keep 4 or 5 pounds on hand at all times!! (Did have to send DH to Kroger for celery & carrots, tho; I don't pull my carrots in the garden, except when I need them & ground a tad frozen right now!!).

Kat, my mom's power finally came on last night, she was camped out at a friend's whose power came on Thursday, but is back home and happy. Thanks so much for your kind offer to check in on her. I think we finally have her convinced to go buy a tracphone for emergency use (her major complaint was that you had to buy the minutes! Then they are only good for 3 months!

). Perhaps the visit by the Okemos police checking on her Christmas day after we had not heard from her since Monday convinced her.

You are quite welcome & glad her power is back on & that everything is ok.

My mom & her sisters "made" my grandpa (the one that passed this past spring) finally get a cell phone a few years ago (when he was about 90). He didn't want to wear one of those "alert" thingies; so that was the compromise, but he had to keep the phone on his belt! And, in his case, my one aunt lived only 5 mins from him, my mom & her other sis within 30 mins.
Yep, thinking the PD knocking on your door just might be the trigger change one's mind!

If you have a family plan, you could look at just adding ur mom (that's what they did with Gramp, I think).
