Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Sorry, if you fall under the proposed Category 4 and conditions of Category 3, you will lose your rights.

The way I read this is to say I could not expand any further or could not put in new if I do not already have chickens or "livestock". I am in a neighborhood so am certainly zoned residential, but what you are saying is that if this goes through I will lose any right that I currently have for keeping any amount of chickens on my own property, right?

collecting one more day and into bator one they go. Bater two can hold about 150 so starting slow with the first 40.

40 is a small hatch?! Lol, my small hatch would be maybe 12. I would love if you posted updates on progress. I would must def hatch... If we could have roosters :(

Well i am freaking out. My chicks were supposed to arrive today. And post office says no chicks came this morning. And the tracking info has them intransit, in florida two days ago and no additional info since then. My poor peeps are lost in the great unknown! I hope they make it they will be 4-5 days old tomorrow

Hopefully they will come soon! Where are you getting them from?

Got another egg today!
400

The one in the middle is a store bought egg! Are the outside ones all from same chicken do you think?

Hi BigHope, welcome to the Michigan thread, one of the fastest-moving on BYC - we all seem to have lots to say, not always very important but always fun (and Friendly)

RaZ, I know we don't say it enough, but thanks for all your work. I hate to think that we would have the ability to raise our own food taken away from us - seems so un-American.

Welcome to all the newbies..

I used cooking oil spray for leg mites last year, worked great. and was easy to use.

I have been thinking of hatching some eggs again.. about the last 2 weeks and getting worse.. might have to pull out the incubator.. dd also wants to hatch again. so thinking it wont be long,
thinking of hatching ee roo x leghorn hens eggs, not sure how ee roo x isa brown hens would work, or ee roo x rhode island red hen.. wondering how the new pullets would be for layers and which color the ee roo with contribute.. green or blue..

I am also thinking of getting some seedlings started, probably beginning of February.

What color is your EE roo? Maybe you could make sex-links!! Egg color would be a total crap-shoot unless you know what color egg he was hatched from.

It surely is fast moving! It seems like if I miss 12 hours there is already 100 posts to check up on (I must confess that I don't read them all

On another note:

There is so much going on. As the big meeting date draws closer, I am paying close attention.
Since I live in Ohio I doubt really if anything I would or could say at the meeting would be taken seriously. I did send an email stating my point of view and plans to retire there and our property and such. Just doesn't seem fair. You pay the taxes, You pay for the land, and yet your neighbor with a large, loud, obnoxious, maybe dangerous dog, who clearly messes more, has more rights than someone who wants a few chickens? Not that all dogs are large , loud, obnoxious, dangerous, etc. but any homeowner gets to keep dogs until the dogs are proven to be dangerous or violates barking ordinances or is loose, etc. Just does NOT make sense. And how about all those who own horses just at the edge of many towns and townships? This will affect those people as well. Many small agricultural business will have a rude awakening if this goes through and they knew nothing about it. There is something not right. Something seems almost unconstitutional about it. I appreciate that everyone here has more at stake than I do. I always thought that government and politics wise Michigan and Ohio were usually close. Both being Automotive and industry, the rust belt if you will. I recently checked out closer Ohio revised code on the subject and it says townships cannot make any ordindince prohibiting agriculture or agricultural use of buildings. Of course there are many sections and the Ohio code speaks to subdivisions and acreage, but basically Ohio is tradtionally a pro ag state. So I sit here and wish there was something that could be done help my neighbors to the north. Best of luck to you and GO GET 'EM!
