Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I just found and shared this on the EE thread, had to share it with you guys as well! It seems that i'm not the only one enamored with my ee's egg colors......

Martha Steward loves her aruacanas so much she actually has a paint collection inspired by them! The rooms are gorgeous! http://willowdecor.blogspot.com/2010/04/araucana-blue-inspiration-big-surprise.html

Not the same deck, but a deck that probably has the 22 aruacana colors in there! Would take some sussing to find which ones perhaps. I know that the aruacana blue is literally named "aruacana blue" :)

Stacy, you might want to send your email via a PM instead of posting it on the thread, there are computer searches done by nasty rascals that will harvest info like phone #'s and email addresses and pass them on for commercial use.

Nag, pea comb and blue egg genes are close to each other, but not so close that both are always present. Pea comb birds can lay eggs other than blue, and some blue egg layers do not have pea combs. Test breeding is the only way you can tell with an EE, which means raising them to adulthood, breeding, hatching out chicks, then raising them until they lay - a long process. Most would use a purebred Ameraucana instead over purebred dark egg layers such as Welsummers, Marans or Penedescencas to produce olive eggers. If you use mixed breeds, the results are much less reliable, and you could get eggs of many different colors and shades.

good to know ee/oe are good layers.. my hens are leghorn, australorp, isa, rhode island red, all good layers i want to hatch all their eggs soon over ee roo.. they all have good friendly, excellent layers.. but wondering what there daughters will do. is it a good idea.. or just go tsc chicks again. I know i would get some cool looking eggs, sorry for all the repeats. just keeps going through my head.. what to do.. what to do..

want to make sure i can keep up with the egg demand next winter like i was able to this winter.

If you don't have a problem with having roosters and you already have an incubator it's really fun to hatch you own! (And cheaper!) you should have a pretty good chance at getting some green egg layers out of them, assuming of course your roo has at least 1 blue egg gene.

I'm soooo excited! Got my first Ameraucana (true) today! Holy smokes was it blue too! Only downside is that someone broke it in the nest box. Hole on one side and cracked all the way around. Loving the egg basket I'm going to have this year!

I started with breeders and hatchery but going with Meyer for the chick's again this year. I liked them last year. I would hatch my own but i don't have it set up for that and am still working on a good setup for the hens. Roos would be a no no for me...per DSO. Lol. Someday I'll try to hatch some. I'll have to put Roo house far away from our house and sound proof it! Lol! I love all the different colors I get! Before the dog attack I had one laying such a pretty light beige almost pink color. But this year is a new season! Can't wait for spring chick's to arrive!!!:jumpy

Just taking a break from current events.
It is snowing here and pretty gloomy out side, but here is a ray of hope. My lime tree has fruit! Nine (9) little fruit-lets are developing on a tree that is only 17 inches tall. This is like incubating eggs, except far less stressful! LOL

Think Spring!

My lemon tree sprouted dozens of flowers last year and not a single lemon.

Then it dropped half of its leaves. Hoping for better luck this year.
