Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Here's the link for the cinnamon pecans.

Both co-workers who tried them today enjoyed!

The "stir every 20 mins" is important, otherwise they'll burn on the bottom. She doesn't immediately say, but your crockpot should be on low.

I love my Marans (Maia & Lela). Got them from Wynette at Chickenstock last June; they were ~22 & 18 weeks old. They are so sweet, beautiful & lay gorgeous eggs. These French girls don't seem to mind the snow too much either! They both just finished a molt & are giving me jumbo eggs almost daily.

These were taken about a week ago...

Thanks, I've been hearing about this Chickenstock thing, I will have to search around and find the original links. Its is family friendly? Meaning are kids welcome or is it more adult and chicken social :) Sounds like you have a very colorful egg collection - love that! I want to do that eventually. Baby steps :)

We've been toying with converting something like you've done, so thank you for sharing pictures. I have not heard of the Delaware yet, another one to check out. Silkies don't like the cold? A lot of Michigan folks seem to have them. I like them due to their broodiness and their cuteness!
Our next pullet will be a Maran's to get the dark chocolate egg. Right now we have seafoam green, medium brown, coffee with cream color and cream colored eggs :) Now to add a dark brown and hopefully getting that blue would be real nice!

We will have chicks for sale of the Iowa's if we have a successful hatch this spring. I hope to have them ready by our Chickenstock meet up this June 21 in Lansing.

Here is a picture of our coop, a converted plastic storage barn to coop and 10 X 5 foot by 6 foot high dog pen run.You can see our purebred black Ameraucana in there and I wanted to mention that I am really in love with our single Delaware pullet. She is the sweetest girl! Always laid back and talks to us a lot by cooing. A great breed to have in your flock in my opinion.
I will stay away from the silkies since they hate cold weather, even though they are so cute ! and I will personally not get bantams in my flock at this point.
And I figured out how to shorten down the comments. Sorry about that.

Here's the link to this year's Chickenstock thread. Not too much to read thru & should give ya an idea. I think the links for food sign up are buried somewhere in there. It is TOTALLY family friendly. Last year was my first. This year it is on Saturday, 21 June, 10:00a - 3:00p. Delta Mills Park in Lansing.
Also, like candy, I chose my chickens mostly for a "rainbow" of eggs .. Just need blue, & possibly olive to finish out my desired palette :D

So. Garlic. I think I have read more about BENEFITS for garlic vs. "Toxicity". Granted, not so sure they are scientific (e.g., natural de-wormer, immunity booster). I have been giving them fresh garlic mixed in their oatmeal & yogurt treat since they went outside last May. Granted, probably at most once/week; probably closer to a couple times per month. Have never noticed any egg flavor issues. But, probably cuz it's not like they are chowing down cloves of garlic everyday. Probably like fuzzy said...moderation.
Never have noticed any other negative issues/consequences from giving it them.

While not thrilled to be stuck out of town for work over the weekend; the good side is 1. It's gonna be in the 50s. 2. Finally have the time to go spend 3 hours at a salon & get my hair done!! I think I am going to throw in a 90 min massage, too. Always seem too busy with home/work to do those "just for me" things!!!

Welcome coyz this is a nice place to be

I am surprised that garlic is on the list I have read many articles promoting garlic for the health of your chickens. and I have only had it flavor the eggs once when a hen ate to much.
used with the pumpkin seed and a few other things for worming, some put it in the water regularly for health benefits

I feed my hens a diet of butter, ham, bell peppers and onions.
That way I get pre-mixed western omelettes.

Food sign up in my signature.

Ok. Time to relax & do a mind clearing via crosswords. 3 hour exam tomorrow morning...with an over abundance of statistics. And my last stats class in college was 30 years ago. Oy...

Well lost a roo and a hen today. They have all faired pretty well considering. Just glad neither of them were my breeding stock. Well stay warm all. Its gotta melt some time right?

The coffee is on and there is some peach cobbler left so come on in and help yourself. Just finished watching the weather forecast and it is going to be down right tropical today compared to the weather we just experienced. My birds seemed to have faired reasonably well although a few of the hen with taller combs have some white tips.

David and I went to the farm yesterday and our friend was very glad we came. He had contemplated driving into Stockbridge to replenish his pantry but had decided that the roads were probably heavily drifted so he was going to wait a few more days before venturing out. With the winds yesterday there were several places where drifting snow made 4 wheel drive almost a necessity. After a trip into town, a quick lunch and a stop at the grocery, we had one very happy and contented old man. A few hours of time, a minimal cost for me, was worth everything to him. Time is one of the greatest gifts you can give the elderly.
