Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Anyone ever order SQ chicks from Strombergs? I thought I'd give it a try this year for my daughter to raise and show for 4H at the county fair. Might have some extras to sell or consider trade for other SQ chicks. Send me a PM. West Michigan area.

I've never ordered from them. But Townline Hatchery is located in West Michigan. Probably not far from you ( Zeeland, MI ). They don't have exotic breeds though.

My daughter is also raising chicks this year for 4-H. It should be interesting.

I received a shipment of Black Australops from Townline Hatchery on Tuesday.  They arrived quickly and very lively.  All are doing well.  If anyone is interested, I need to sell 15 of them ( all are females ).  $2.50/chick.  Please PM me if interested.  I live in the Haslett/Williamston, MI area.  Stay warm!

aI have some australoropes they are great gals they both go broody and make good mums. If you werent so far i would take some.

None of the hatcheries are going to offer show-quality birds. They may do ok at county exhibits or for children in handler classes. Dedicated breeders are the best source for show birds. Expect to pay more, possibly considerably more, as those breeders have enormous investment of time, money and effort into producing their stock (it really makes me

when I see people complain about the cost of birds that breeders have dedicated their resources to improving).

From what I understand these birds are coming from Urch/Turnland who have a very good rep from breeding to standard.

Our poultry 4-H leader here in Ingham County highly recommended Townline Hatchery. She claims to have had quite a few champions from birds purchased from them over the years. That said, I'm sure the odds of getting champion quality birds from reputable breeders dedicated to this sort of thing is 10x better.

I'm really more interested in egg output.

I picked up some Guineas a few years back from Townline, they were good birds. The past few years our birds came from Murray Mcmurray and they have done well at the county fair level for us. My daughter entered 6 birds and got 5 blue ribbons and one red ribbon for her pullets. I had a conversation with one of the judges two years ago and he told me if you want quality get them from Duane Urch in Minnesota. I'm going to follow his advice this year and give him a try. I Googled the Minnesota State Fair 2013 chicken results and the name Urch and Turnland appeared to win at least half the categories. I'm not looking to get into the major shows, just trying to give her a chance at best in show at the county level.
