Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I was looking to get only three chicks: a buff orpington, a silver laced wyandotte, and an ambers links (still debating on that last one).  We have two cats, so I'm trying to think of a way to keep the chicks safe, the house safe (with the heating lamp), and the cats not too annoying.  I saw someone put their tote of chicks in a dog kennel to keep the cats/dogs out?  Thinking maybe that might be an option... :fl

I got 12, 1 day old chicks at TSC late last March. Kept them in a large Tupperware tub (pic) with a piece of 4' plastic garden fencing over the top. I have 3 cats. I had a chair that the heat lamp was clamped to, & 2 of the cats took turns "watching" over the babies & sleeping on the chair. I never let them halve free rein of the room, but if you look at the second pic, you can see the relationship between cat & birds!

After they got too big for the Tupperware, I built a ~4'x8' "pen out of cardboard boxes & that worked just fine til I kicked their fuzzy butts out to the coop!

I will say. I NEVER want to raise chicks in the house again, the dust in the spare bedroom was indescribable!! Took DAYS to clean :D

Oh, I am currently looking at setting up a 10-12 day jaunt to Maui for next Feb,,.i can't take another winter without a warm break...& haven't been there in 7 years...

AND, my drive is ALREADY drifted over from the winds..& the snow JUST started. I am STUCK (DH has truck )

1mutt - ducks, para sailers, ....airplanes.....what next? That plane was flying very low when it buzzed our house this morning, I noticed it wondered what was up.

I ordered turkey's today and thought about offering to order more, but knowing how far I am north I didn't figure anyone wanted to travel to get them.

Now you know I hate winter, but now there is someone who has reason to hate it more than me. Can you guess what gross thing this is?

It is my guinea girl's toe, she lost it while I was out and watched it come off. Gross! She is getting around fine although acted like it hurt for a short time. This afternoon she made herself at home in my bantam coop where they sleep on the floor and don't roost. However, when it was time to close up she was back in the big coop up on a roost. She's my tough old bird, 3 1/2 years old. Survived three coyote attacks, two dog attacks and multiple hawks.

Yes there was a plane that landed on the ice over by Mackinac Island - lost power and had to make an emergency landing. Fortunately for them there is plenty of thick ice that is very smooth this year compared to most years.

Plus some people visiting in Mackinaw City decided to ride their snowmobiles over to Mackinac Island. From Mac City. Apparently unaware that the Coast Guard ice breakers keep a passage open through the straits all year round. They crossed about an hour after an ice breaker went through, fortunately it's cold enough that the passage froze enough to support their sleds. When someone told them what danger the two of them and their young son had been in, they said "There weren't any signs telling us not to go". Argh!!!

Pick me! Pick me! Do have a great time!
I WISH I was leaving this white state!!!!!:he I am trying to dream of warmer days...:love
I'm still in denial...it's really 70º outside and the whitestuff falling is really just dense rain!:lau

My home is always open to friends. I have coffee to warm your insides and stories to warm your ears.

@RaZSounds good! I will be at my moms helping for few hours in the afternoon and will come by for a barrel and coffee after supper if that's ok. You can pm me the address. :D And I will pm you more details and phone. Do you think the barrel will fit in the back seat of an extended cab pick up? In this weather I'm reluctant to put in the bed of the truck for a two hour + drive.
