Great advise, Opa!
I had to open the bator so save hopie when she was born and twisted her ankle between 2lodged shells. I am certain it is the reason the last chick was not able to hatch; hopie was the reason for the hatch and i had to reset the leg joint so she wasn't crippled for life so no regrets but it was very sad.
The drop in humidity shrink wraps the membrain to the babies and suffocates them.

Aww Fuzzy. That's a tough call. I'm glad you saved hopie though. Good to know on the bator. I don't hatch...yet. I'd love to but already have "too many irons in the fire."

Not sure if this helps... put a towel over the bator when opening it to keep most of the warmth in. I have lil windows I can open and thats what I did to help.

I am getting 3 or 4 silkies next week or so. They will be 2 weeks old. I am also getting an order of various breeds of standard size 1 day old chicks at the end of the month. And again the first week of May. I want to integrate them all together successfully. Since I have to quarantine I'm not sure on how to go about it while they're still little. Anyone have any experience with this and have any tips?

Look up the breeds from Townline Hatchery - that is where they are getting them from, I am told. Bantams?

Pondering Townline statement they made to me when I called them about sexing the Welsummers - they said they only had breeds they could feather sex. So how do they sex their "Americana" or EE's?

The chipmunk striped chicks appear to be Welsummers. The very dark vee on their heads indicates that they are pullets.

4 crx ,2 silkies, 1 silver laced wyandotte pullet, 2 welsummer ?, 1 bantam?and a rouen.

I thought they were Welsummers and tried to remember the earlier post on sexing.(yeah) They were in mixed straight run brooder. oops!

I guess that blows the they just appeared theory. The small bantam was the one I really like to know breed. feathered flesh colored feet, light grayish and a little smaller than the silkies.
