Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Only thing keeping me away from those chicks is the eggs in the bator...

I wish i could give some out...mg. sigh. They are super hardy unless you jam an air tube down them. :( I am hoping for at least a few blue laced pullets.

T
He walks with a limp. All insurance companies involved is denied paying his er and dr bills as well as workmans comp. Workmans comp told him he wasnt hurt bad enough... sorry he wasnt kill jerks!!! And the drunk driver who had no license and 2nd offence had his lawyer going after my hubbys insurance because he claims that my hubby was blocking the rd. What a load of crap!
Drunk crossed center line hitting my hubby head on, my hubby has 70 strobe lights on wrecker, which you can see from the bar parking lot a mile away on a straight rd. Drunk couldnt he give his name he was so drunk but mysteriously can remember that my hubby was supposedly blocked his lane...
Just hate this guy!

My hubby is still sore and has a bad limp but did go through a bad case of nightmares of dieing in crashes and was weary on doing wrecker calls for about 2 weeks. Still scared but managing but I know its effeting his ability to do his job like he should. Elbow still sore but healing. Most bruises are yellow and going away now. Still not eating a lot and still has a few nightmares but has slept through the night now a bunch of times. So hes coming around. Its scary to see such a big guy who isnt scared of anything be like this. I worried there for awhile but relieved to see him coming around again.
We'll get through this however the big stressful part is about to happen with lawyers and workmans comp....

Dealing with workers comp is a pain. Just don't give up and don't settle for less that they owe. Their goal is to wear you down until you settle just to get it over with. It can take years.

A sad reality for many people who want to have chickens is that too few people are informed as to what wonderful birds they really are. As a result many communities have passed ordinances making their possession unduly restricted or even illegal.

Most states have a designated state bird, Michigan being no exception; and like many other states the robin was the bird chosen. I think we should have a state bird that is unique to our state. We should mount a campaign to have the chicken declared ours. Young children would learn about them in school and ownership would be promoted. Perhaps then our fowl would be accepted and even promoted with a sense of pride.

The only problem I foresee would be selecting a particular breed to visually represent chickens. After much though on the various attributes of so many kinds I finally realized one image that might be most recognizable and accepted by the majority.......The Rotisserie Chicken.

Candy, can't wait for pics! Remember to step away from the bator until they are all out. Lol
LOL Fuzzy,

I can't believe a woman with my conviction and will power is so tempted to open that bator!!! We have five hatched as of 630am approximately 20.5 in the hatch cycle. Our very first attempt at incubating and so far we have much more than we thought. We started with about 10 eggs that were collected over three weeks and just put in a wire basket on my kitchen counter. Those went into the bator along with 11 more "fresh" collected eggs..these were collected warm, never frozen.

I expected nothing to hatch, we have five now with 3 Iowa Blues and the 2 EE's have hatched too! So exciting! Will post pics probably Friday, we plan on opening the bator to get the rambunctious ones out and into the brooder for food and water. Hopefully the rest of the eggs will be hatched or well zipped by then (day 23).

It is definitely a pain..they make you go to their doctors too which takes so much time. In a claim I was forced to file (I didn't want to, but the office manager saw me hurt my knee at work) took a year and they wanted me to provide them the names of my doctors back to birth! I refused they have no business knowing my other health history and would have nothing to do with my knee being injured. Thank goodness they denied the claim and I was free to pursue physical therapy. Basically, I was not horribly injured and wanted quick treatment to get better. I truly support that others pursue the Workman's compensation no matter what trials they put you through because very serious injuries it is worth it!

So we have always given a dozen fresh eggs to our neighbors each week. They're really great people.

It breaks our hearts that he was diagnosed with stomach cancer this spring. He has started his chemo treatments & we pray that will work. As he gets his treatments though, he gets terrible mouth sores & a painful throat, to add to his already aggravated stomach due to the cancer.

We found out yesterday, that the only thing he is able to eat during the treatments is egg salad. They didn't tell us that! I had to find out from my mom who was watching our farm for us as we were gone this weekend camping. They took the 8 eggs that she collected that day as he starts his next round of chemo today, but insisted that just a dozen a week was fine. They're good people, & I'm sure they just don't want to inconvenience us (it took us months of giving them eggs weekly for them to stop trying to pay us for them). Well all I can say is that now they'll be getting 2 dozen eggs a week & I hope it helps him if only a tiny measure.

This is a post I made last year. Just to update on this...
I've known him since I was in 2nd grade, that is when my mom bought the property that butts up next to his. When I became an adult, I bought the property from my mom.

He's the kind of man that would ALWAYS go out of his way to do whatever he can for other people. Us included. Never asked for anything in return, though we would always help them whenever we could. Which is why we loved being able to give them eggs each week. It was just a small token that we could do to help repay them for the years of kindness, friendship, & love.

This week, he has been admitted into a hospice facility, and I am sad to say that he's in his final days, losing his fight with cancer.

So, I know this is a "chicken" forum... but I thought I'd share this story with you all, that another person wrote, about a wonderful fellow backyard farmer among us that is going to be greatly missed. It's a great representation of the kind of man his is.
