nice to know they're making the effort to keep officials nicely trained and informed..... (sarcasm)........so they can screw us over.

So tell me....... if they're pre-training officials before the final meeting... does this mean they aren't doing a darn thing other than just push it through?

Of the GAAMPs that were passed, 3 had no changes. Easy to accept that.
The other ones had issues that the committee chairperson had difficulty explaining. The pesticide GAAMP was especially disturbing as they took out language that requires farmers to follow label directions.
It was pretty obvious that the commissioners had not read all of the GAAMP changes and merely rubber stamped the approval with little to no understanding. I think the Site Selction approval vote was delayed only because of the letter writing of so many concerned people. Commissioners Kennedy and Montri asked good questions that the committee chair could not answer. The vote has been moved to April 28. I am very nervous.

Are there any mills near Grand Rapids that sell feed? Right now I buy Purina pellets but I would really prefer to support a local operation if there is one. Thanks!

Ah the joys of a small flock. You get to know which hen lays which egg, when she is most likely ready to lay and if she is an everyday girl.
How well do you know your hens?

Yogi - medium tan, very shiny. 6 of 7 days.
Boo-Boo - pinkish tan, matte finish. 5 of 7 days.
Lucy - green with occasional blue spots. 6 of 7 days.
Ethel - whitish green, long and skinny eggs pointed at both ends. 4/5 of 7 days.
Heckle - dark tan, consistent colour and shiny. 6 of 7 days.
Jeckle - specked tan & dark, dull finish. 5 of 7 days.

I'm sure I'll lose track when the brooder babies start producing but that is months away.

How close? You could trip over to Fremont and go to the co-op. There's also the Feed and Grain store in Ravenna. A tad out of GR but sometimes a fun road trip? Personally I have done the math every which way and find the stuff at FFH, price wise, to be competitive with everyone out there.

I use buckets with nipples during the winter (or try to at least) with a stock tank deicer. Keeps the water liquid but the nipples DO ice up. IMO the set up works well if the coop gets above freezing during they day. We ended up dragging 1 gal waterers out everyday for most of the winter because the nipples would freeze up.

I will be looking into a cookie ton heater and for some 3+gal waterers in yard sales this summer in preparation for next winter. Ymmv.

I think the horizontal nipples are less likely to freeze up.

That guy who posted in the last couple days used the horizontal, a pump to keep water mixed up and an aquarium heater...which also might keep the water warmer, but I don't think he ever measured the water temp.

Hm. That is over by my sis.

Interesting about the bumblefoot, taprock.

Of my girls in the one group have it; hope had it but i could tell her last corn was pushing to the surface. All i did for everyone but her was red cote, 3 weeks of wrap for infected ones, and winter's deep bedding. I think heat is a catalyst for the infection too.
