Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Hi! it's been a little while, Welcome to all the new members! And condolences to any with losses. And Welcome Spring!

And a great big Congratulation to @SillyChicken on the quints! Wow! So cute!

My recent shipment of chicks had an Ameracauna with scissors beak and her leg color isn't appropriate for a true Ameracauna. The hatchery will refund my money or give me credit. But I really wanted that Ameracauna. Is anyone planning to bring Ameracauna chicks to Chickenstock? Thanks!

Hatchery stock is seldom (some say never) true Ameraucanas, as their color and type are not correct. If you want standard Ams, you will need to buy from a breeder. If you are looking for blue egg layers and not show birds, you will likely find your Easter Eggers to be quite satisfactory.

I'm not sure how late in the spring it will be before I finish my coop. How late do local stores typically stock chicks, and what breeds are most commonly seen at places like TSC?

Otherwise i will have to order online, which is no big deal.

What are the most reliable / best quality chicken sites.?

I have looked at mypetchicken, but what do you guys recommend?

I have wondered about that from time to time.
I ordered my Ams from a big hatchery as 4 week old pullets. The birds actually came from a breeder in Texas. They have the slate coloured legs but that is about all I know of the breed and it's not like I will be showing them. Lucy and Ethel are quite tame and have wonderful personalities. Love the green eggs.

Anyone have geese? We ordered a pair with our ducks and I am starting to freak out and think I should cancel them. We've never had waterfowl and I'm worried the geese are going to be overkill in our backyard (3/4 acre fenced area for poultry to share).

LOTS of poop, they are pooh machines! Geese are just bigger poop machines... :D

I don't think true Ameraucanas lay green eggs.

You're correct @aart true Ameracaunas lay blue eggs. Easter eggers lay variety of blue to green eggs depending on the genetics. Easter eggers are a cross with an Ameracauna and something else. Olive eggers are a cross between Ameracauna and Marans.

LOOKING FOR SPECKLED SUSSEX CHICKS

Hi,
I haven't been on here in a few years! Life has been so busy. Looking forward to getting back in touch with some of the great people I met on BYC on the old Michigan thread! I do remember Sam. Is he still on here? Sam, my little girl and I came out to your place and got 3 ISAs from you! She was about 4 at the time (she is now almost 8) and still remembers all of your chickens and talking to your Mom.

Well, I was given 2 speckled Sussex hens that needed to be rehomed from a friend in the the fall. I ADORE them. They are sweet and beautiful and have given me eggs all winter long! I am looking to add more to my flock. Does anyone know of anyone that raises them? I am in the Milford area. I am also thinking of getting a SS roo too. Any help would be appreciated!!!

Thanks
Kim

multi post never works for me and it's hard to remember all the people I wanted to reply too.

Welcome back Steve!

Fuzzy, congrats on the BYC Friend award!

I would avoid Ideal Poultry. I believe townline may have MG free birds, but please verify with them. I had nothing but trouble with sick birds last year from Ideal... most of the chicks didn't survive (two orders worth) and then the rest of my birds became ill there after. I believe they had MG and affected the rest of my flock.

Goat babies are still doing good so far. Mom is much better today, though around midnight, she rejected the two smallest ones. I pulled them into the house and will be bottle feeding them. I am still taking some milk from mom, but I'm mixing it with whole milk in order to leave enough for the other three, plus it will make it easier to feed the wee ones. My mom offered to feed them while I'm at work so that will help. The little tricolor in the back of the photo, finally took the bottle this morning so her chances have just improved greatly!

5 babies are rare and I hope we don't have a repeat!

<< quarter for comparison... they are tiny little things!
