Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Sounds like a cool OE mix going on there. Post some pics when you can.

Here's a couple pics of them. They're a funny bunch. All eight eggs I incubated hatched and there they are. Chunk is front and center in the first picture, the largest chick we have. They're at that awkward stage of feathering that doesn't tell you too much about what they'll look like and they're each a little different.

So sorry to hear about the puppy! hope he IS on the mend.

Stacey, I'm so sorry about your goats. :( Good for you for following your instincts and getting the vet there though! Hopefully Yoko makes a complete recovery and you can try for kids again next year (? not sure how the kidding things works)

I think DH is going to pick up meat birds today on his way home from work. Our TSC said they're only going to have chicks for about another 2 weeks, so we figure we'd better get them while we can. It's actually cheaper for us to pay the 1.99/bird than it is to order from one of the hatcheries by the time we pay shipping for the amount we're doing this year. I was really hoping to do MORE than last year, but it looks like we're going to do about HALF of what we did last year since no one else seems to want to go in on them with us. Last year we split an order of 70 3-ways and I was seriously contemplating doing 100 this year. That's just too much for us to cover for feed costs on our own though. I figure that between the 30 white broilers, and then possibly using the other a-frame for the extra cockerels from incubating on a more free-range plan for most of the summer to cut up for fryers, we'll be doing alright for chicken for next year. We only have 4 left in the freezer from last year, and I broke down and bought grocery store chicken a few times last month and it was so mushy compared to our home-grown birds!

OK, today it happened; went to Soldan's and bought three EE chicks, supposedly pullets. Then to TSC and got six porcelain bantam chicks. Madness!! Again!! Next week the chicks come by mail; should have waited, but never mind... Already I think one of the EEs is a cockrel; what a surprise (NOT). They are cute, and it's only another nine chicks... I am managing to not call John Blehm about his current batch of chicks, so that must be good! Mary
LOL... Did we talk long enough for you to hear that Brett got some EE's over at the MLK Soldans last week? Supposed to be pullets too! Congrats, we have 14 babies in our guest bedroom, but I know you will have many more than me soon :)

Still looking to know if you are going to need help with the freezer birds?

tori hope your dog gets better.... poor pup!

Stacy... poor doe! sorry you lost your babies.

So sorry @Stacykins about your losses. I hope your doe is feeling better very soon!
@ladyrsanti your chicks are so cute! Thanks for posting the pics. I'm curious to see see the egg colors now! I have Olive eggers coming soon. I have a hen now hers are dark sometimes and sometimes not. Last week she laid a huge double yolker. She hadn't done that since last year when she first came into lay. I'm so addicted to the chicks and all the colors!

Sorry @Stacykins. :hugs

Who is using recycled strawberry plastic containers for wintersowing? I am having a bear of a time with mine drying out. Last week I had a tray full of basil, I swear half have died. This part of growing seedlings is the hardest for me.

I *don't* use strawberry baskets for that exact reason! maybe try taping most of the holes along the bottom shut?

I'm wondering if I could use strawberry baskets in my incubator to separate my breeds.......not sure if there would be enough airflow/ventilation though. I have about 4 kinds I'm going to want to keep separate here in about a month.

So Sorry Stacy for your ordeal and loss, hope the doe recovers quickly and fully.

Best of luck with the pups pooper, hope he too recovers quickly and fully.

Those olive eggers kinda look like one of my hatches chicks.....EE sire and they didn't know which momma except brown egg layer.

This is it at 4 weeks, fuzzhead stage, on Monday....I'm hoping pullet.
