Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

The pickles are flooding in by the wagon-full. We should have started canning a week ago when we got back from vacation, but have been lazy about it & have just been eating the pickles instead. I harvested a bunch of kale, lettuce, zucchini... & of course pickles. We tossed a bunch of overgrown, low lying, or bug eaten kale, lettuce, & pickles to the farm animals. The guinea hen was SO FUNNY & loud. We started cutting up some big fat pickles for the hens & the guinea were one pen over watching us. My word, she saw the treats & wasn't going to let us forget she exists. LOL. Yes, she got some too. It's like the kids at the bank teller drive through window... "See us, see us? We're right here & we would like some suckers.. I mean treats!". Too funny. It's nice to see the garden doing so well this year after last year's nearly complete failure.

No complaints about the heat around here. I was out at 4:00 in the hot hot sun working in the garden & doing all the farm chores. I'll admit that it felt nice when I was finally able to go sit in AC... but I'll take the hot sun over the crap winter & snow any day!

All the kale & lettuce was washed, dried, & packed. I froze most of the kale, but kept some out to make THE BEST potato, sausage, & kale soup for dinner tonight. So good... I'm excited just thinking about it.

Does anybody here know of a good place around the Ann Arbor area to get red wiggler worms at? I've been thinking about setting up a worm farm so that I can have plenty of yummy treats for my girls.

Might want to think about mealworms instead....everything I used to feed to my earthworms I now feed right to the chickens.

I waited till dark before doing chores... after working in AC all day, it was hard to go out and do any work outside. Instead I worked hard on getting a commission done that I had been neglecting. I almost have it finished, noticed after midnight that I was getting sloppy so I stopped. Should be able to finish up tonight.

yeah good suggestion, I've been thinking about the same thing, and you can keep the mealie farm inside for winter treats!

There is a place in Brooklyn that sells all sorts of bait, thought I don't know if they have reds. (Knutsons)

Yeah, I have thought about doing mealworms as well. thing is that I kinda want to do worms so that I can have the worm tillings for the garden.

Oh yeah, I might have to make a run over there sometime. That's not all that far from me here in Clinton.
